MB in Feburary, River Oaks, Barefoot, Yacht Club

This will be our first time to Myrtle Beach we will be going the first week in Feburary from MIchigan, and we are leaning towards a MB National package(lodging and golf) 5nights/5rounds 2bedroom/2bath condo. Have and options of River Oaks, Barefoot Resorts $60 more, or Yacht Club Villas $100 more. Our 5 rounds we are thinking Aberdeen, River Club, Willbrook, MBN Kings North, and Southcreek. I have a few questions, there will be four of us in one condo, is $1200 for this package a good deal or can I get better? Would it be worth it to pay more for Barefoot or the Yacht Club? Will we be pleased with our course choices how would you rate them? And is there anything about golfing Feburary in Myrtle Beach that we should know? Any information and opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Not a golfer but live here. RiverOaks is in Conway west of the Intracoastal Waterway, we are not talking a great distance from MB but there are just other options I think you would like better. If you are wanting to be closer to things to do, Riveroaks condo%26#39;s or that area is probably not your best choice, but close to the golf courses. Barefoot Resort is much nicer but further away in North Myrlte Beach but close to lots of things. Check our Myrltewood Golf Course, they have condo%26#39;s also and it is in an excellent Myrtle Beach location, and probably better course. I think there might be 2 courses there, but internet could tell you. I am not sure where Yacht Club Villa%26#39;s are. But I think either Barefoot or Yacht Club is going to be better than River Oaks area.

The courses that you have listed are decent courses (Kings North really has a decent repuation...) Aberdeen is a pretty good drive from the area, but a decent course...not saying that MB National courses arent some of the best...but you may want to look at ';mixing'; it up a bit.....I know there have been many a post on this subject, so I%26#39;ll look thru to see if I can bump it up for you...would be nice to stay at Barefoot Resort...not for sure if I would pay that much more to stay at the Yacht Club...since they are about one in the same (just a different building!)....you might try looking at www.myrtlebeachtrips.com I know with the brand new Marina Inn..they are offering some great packages there!

Golf in Feb is a busy time...especially if the weather has been real nasty up north! LOL! It can also mean frost delays if the weather doesnt fully cooperate here...but all in all a great time for golf at the beach! Since it is a busy time...and if you wouldnt want to book ahead on the golf...I%26#39;d pick out a few great courses, lock those in and take your chances with some ';great rates'; with the others when you get in! We have sooooo many...and since you are 1st timers....wow...a number of options...

2 posters that LOVE MB golf....Soparnafreak and TonkMK...maybe they will read this post, and help us novices when it comes to golf!

Be sure for night life to hit Broadway at the Beach ---- Crocodile Rocks is always a fav with the golfing crowd...and with just about anybody...even us locals!

:)

We love Crocodile Rocks-go at least twice a month. Best entertainment for the money-locals get in free, but still the $5-$7 cover charge otherwise also gets you into Revolutions which is a dance club. So 1 cover gets you into 2 clubs.

That%26#39;s 20 rounds of golf and a place to stay for 5 nights for 4....I%26#39;d say $1200 is a good price. I%26#39;d rather stay at Barefoot or the Yacht Club Villas would be my 1st choice; both are at Barefoot Landing/Barefoot golf courses. All 4 of those courses are very nice but more expensive. The Barefoot Landing places to stay would be a little further to your 5 courses except for Aberdeen. I really don%26#39;t like that couse but it may have iimproved since I played it when it was Buck Creek. I%26#39;d say you have a very good deal. I%26#39;d also spend the extra $100 for the Yacht Club myself. Use Hwy. 22 and 31 to your advantage and look your courses up on Yahoo maps or Google maps or the like.

As far as courses are concerned, these are fairly accurate but opinions vary.

The courses you have are fine with Kings North being the best. Before you make your decision check out the Breakers and Grande Shores Hotel golf packages.Wouldn%26#39;t you rather have a nice ocean view than to be inland? Both of these hotels are known for their golf packages with Grande Shores being in a great location.

If that $1200 figure includes your cart fees, then you%26#39;ve got one heck of a deal!! I checked into booking those 5 courses on line (without lodging) on the total cost (including carts and taxes) would be $242 per person.....$968 for the four of you. So you%26#39;re paying about $232 for lodging for 5 days......not bad at all! If your cart fees are not included......that%26#39;s another story.

I%26#39;ve stayed at River Oaks in the past.....very nice condos! I%26#39;m just not real crazy about the location......the 501 area is such a nightmare, but it sure is centrally located! (not to mention right around the corner from Ron-Jon%26#39;s.....the best $2 happy hour burger you can get!) My preference would be to stay a little more north but close to the 31 bypass. There%26#39;s so much great golf up in the northern reaches of MB as well as Brunswick Co in NC.

As for the golf.....I%26#39;ve played only Aberdeen (many times) out of the 5. I really like the course design although I played there last week and I%26#39;d have to rate conditions as just %26#39;good%26#39; especially compared to 2 other courses we played: Shaftesbury Glen and Carolina National (one of my favorites on the planet!!). You might also want to consider courses like Farmstead, Thistle, River%26#39;s Edge or any of the 3 courses at St James Plantation. Some of these are a bit up into Brunswick Co so staying in the center of MB may be a bit of a hike.

As for golfing MB in February....could very well be a coin toss. On the plus side......you stand a pretty good chance of golfing in shorts and short sleeves. Of course you may also be dressed in turtlenecks and gloves! On the bright side.......you%26#39;re golfing!!....how many pals in Michigan will say the same! :o)

I believe you will be happy with the value for the $1200....

I would recommend against playing Aberdeen in February...It is a lowcountry course and is highly likely to be a quagmire that time of year. My experience is that it doesn%26#39;t drain very well, and the likelihood of wet conditions makes that choice a kind of risk.

I do know that the package you are pricing can offer Waterway hills for the same price, which I believe is a Robert Trent Jones design. I prefer that to the Aberdeen option. Or for a couple of dollars more (literally), you might be able to play River Hills or Heather Glen in the Little River area. Both are great courses...

The Barefoot Lodging option for 60 bucks extra is well worth the price. You will be getting a newer facility as well as a better location. I%26#39;d steer clear of theRiver Oaks complex.... I%26#39;m not familiar with the Yacht Club.

Please be aware that some of your course choices are located in varied geographic areas. Your drive time to the farthest ones is likely to be longer than you think. My real thoughts are to choose one given area and go with a lodging option that complements the local course choices. For example:

If you stay at MB National, you should play from the following list:

MB Nat%26#39;l North, South, West

Legends Heathland, Moorland

World Tour

Wild Wing

If you stay at Litchfield you should play:

Pawley%26#39;s plantation

True Blue

River Club

Willbrook

Litchfield

Prestwick

If you stay in Calabash you should play:

Oyster Bay

Sea Trails

Sandpiper Bay

Thistle

Heather Glen

The Big Cats

If you do this type of trip, you will make better use of the limited daylight in February and not spend most of your precious time on the highway. This is especially important if you plan to play more than 18 holes on one or more days. There are several 27 or more hole facilities down there.

This way, you can do a different geographic area on subsequent trips and get to see the entire area....

Good Luck with your choices. I hope this helps

Gorski

I did look into Grande Shores 2B/2B beachfront condo and was able to get the same type of deal 5n/5rds for $307 p/p. Would you recommend that resort over Barefoot/River Oaks?

And yes these prices include Accomendations, green fees, and carts!

I would most certainly opt for Grande Shores....hey, its oceanfront! Guess that%26#39;s why I used to come to the beach....and Grande Shores is a bit more centrally located than Barefoot Resort. Close to a number of great places to eat and drink too!
