Best Fried Green Tomatoes/Grits

I love trying regional/local food specialities when travelling and would like to know which restaurants in Charleston/Mt. Pleasant are recommended as having the best fried green tomatoes and which have the best grits.

Also, are there low-country specialties that are ';must eats';?

Thanks for your help.

Best Fried Green Tomatoes/Grits

Lots of good ones. Shrimp and Grits is a must eat Lowcountry food. Frogmore Stew, She-Crab soup, and some catfish fried one way or another. Cuisine has a lot of similarities to New Orleans cuisine.

Best Fried Green Tomatoes/Grits

We like the fried green tomatoes and the shrimp and grits at Joseph%26#39;s. Try them for lunch. Very popular, simple, local place.

There are literally hundreds of recipes for shrimp and grits, so you might want to sample several.

try cru cafe, jestines, hominy grill and tommy%26#39;s.

Thanks y%26#39;all! We%26#39;ve heard good things about Cru Cafe and Joseph%26#39;s and already have them on our list, so we%26#39;ll be sure to try them out. Shrimp and grits sounds great but what the heck is Frogmore Stew?

Frogmore stew: shrimp, crab, smoked sausage, corn, seasoning. No frogs. Usually made in big pots to serve a crowd. I have never had it at a restaurant in Charleston, although I suspect you can find it.

Wow, that does sound tasty. I%26#39;ll look for it during our trip. Thanks, kiawahvilla.

Also, don%26#39;t forget to try Charleston She-Crab soup. We like the she-crab at 82 Queen; but it is good everywhere it is served, and it is served everywhere.

South Carolina pulled-pork barbecue - especially at Bessinger%26#39;s, on Rte. 17 - is delicious. The sauce is mustard based and distinctive. Bessinger%26#39;s is casual and quick. You can easily stop there on your way back into Charleston after visiting on of the Ashley River plantations.
