Diff between Isle of Palms and IOP Wild Dunes

What is the difference between the Isle of Palms and Isle of Palms Wild Dunes. Many rental web sites seem to separate the two but they look like they are on the same island. Do they have differences in personality/character, or types/prices of accomodations, or types of retail establishments, or types of people/vacationers? Would one be preferable over the other for a family vacation?

If it%26#39;s a resort, how are there rentals by various owners and agencies? If you went to a resort like you find in Arizona or Hawaii, the whole place is owned by the hotel - they own/rent all the rooms and own all the land. Is it kind of like the Plantations on Hilton Head Island where there are huge tracts of land called Plantations and there are hotels at the heart of the Plantation but there are still individual owners of detached single family homes and condos within the Plantation boundaries? Do these private rental homes in Wild Dunes get some kind of privileges at the resort, like use of the pool and beach?

Wild Dunes is essentially a gated community with condos, a hotel, and private beach houses. You have to have a pass to get through the gates.

We actually just got back from there Saturday(my third time going) and stayed at Wild Dunes at a condo called Ship Watch. You can rent bikes, play golf, and play tennis. As far as renting, I believe most of the accomodations must be rented through a rental company. Wild Dunes have their own but you can also rent through Resort Quest(who we used) and others as well.

Thanks for your response. Yeah, Wild Dunes sounds similar to the Plantation areas on hilton Head Island. Back to the original question, is the Wild Dunes part nicer than the non-Wild Dunes part of the island, or are they about the same? I see on VRBO two condos for rent in the winter, one for $495 on IOP and one for $605 in WDIOP. Assuming they are the same quality accomodations, is it worth the extra $110 per week to stay in WDIOP rather than IOP?

Calling Wild Dunes a ';Resort'; is misleading. Wild Dunes is actually just a gated community that occupies part of the Isle of Palms. It%26#39;s not a resort in the traditional sense like you would see in Cancun. Although the units within Wild Dunes are owned by individuals (except for the Boardwalk Inn) you can rent them directly through Wild Dunes which I prefer NOT to do because it is MUCH more expensive to do that. I much prefer looking at the www.vrbo.com site where the actual owners list their properties. You can also haggle with the price to a certain degree. Lastly you can rent through the local real estate offices like Dunes Properties or Island Realty...or with www.resortquest.com

There are just many ways to rent a place. The grounds are a definitely manicured within Wild Dunes Resort and there is a golf course located on the grounds.

The Boardwalk Inn which I mentioned earlier is a hotel located within Wild Dunes. This is truly a hotel and not owned by individuals.

Isle of Palms is the barrier island off the coast of Charleston and Wild Dunes is a high price resort on the iland with 100%26#39;s of homes and Condo%26#39;s~~ very very upscale. The rest of the island rentals are just houses on the island. About 3/4%26#39;s the island is upscale resore area Wild Dunes (gated)~~ ask me anything about the island and I will answer you back!

Ilse of Palms is a barrier island just 10 miles from Charleston, SC. Wild Dunes Resort occupies the nothern end of the island. Some people have mentioned that Wild Dunes is not a typical resort, which is incorrect. The resort is very typical in the sense that it is a gated community with a private beach. There are 17 clay tennis courts, over 20 swimming pools, 2 golf courses, day spa, fitness center, 2 restaurants, bike rentals, a marina (para sailing/jet skis/kayaking) and a first class children%26#39;s recreation program. The accommodations range from a three diamon hotel to villas and homes (1-6 bedrooms).

What is not typcial about the resort is how the accommodations are rented. You can only rent the hotel through Wild Dunes Resort exclusively. All of the homes and villas within the gates are owned by individual home owners. The home owners have the option of renting their unit through Wild Dunes or an outside rental agency, or they can simply rent them themselves.

Outside rental companies and owners will offer you very attractive rates that seem unbeatable. The problem is that since you are renting through an outside company, you will pay to use the resort%26#39;s amenities at a premium rate. Some parts of the resort are also off limits unless you have rented through Wild Dunes. You are also not guaranteed daily house keeping services or 24 hour maintenance (which comes in handy if your AC breaks in July!)

Wild Dunes rates are higher, but since you are a guest of the resort you have access to all activities and services at a complimentary or discounted rate (based on each service). There is also housekeeping daily (including dep cleans) %26amp; 24 hour maintenance. The higher rate really just reflects the more access you will have once you get to the resort and increased level of services.

It depends on what you%26#39;re looking to do while you are on the island, but don%26#39;t be surprised when you can%26#39;t use the ';resort%26#39;s'; amenities when you book through an outside company for a lower rate. There are less surprises and more exclusive access and generally much nicer quality units if you book through Wild Dunes. My family always rents through Wild Dunes because we use all the amenities and don%26#39;t want the hassle of being restricted.

A little bit of clarification though . . . are you saying that the resort amenities, like the 17 clay tennis courts, over 20 swimming pools, 2 golf courses, day spa, fitness center, 2 restaurants, bike rentals, a marina (para sailing/jet skis/kayaking) and a first class children%26#39;s recreation program, are all included (no additional fee) if you rent through the Wild Dunes official resort, and are not available at all (even if you pay a fee) if you rented from an owner or other agency? Or do you pay a fee either way? Or do you pay a fee either way but it is discounted if you rented from the official resort?
