After playing The Aiken Golf Club recently, I enjoyed a quick history lesson about the golf course from its owner, Jim McNair,Jr. He is a

PGA professional and the 2hd generation to own and manage this

delightful classic style course. He said the course was built in 1912 and was designed by Donald Ross, but credit for the design went to John Inglis, a Scotsman who apprenticed with Ross. Inglis actually oversaw the construction, as Ross was very busy with other course designs. The Aiken Golf club is also the first golf course in the US to install tees for women in 1916. I noticed a photo of Babe Zaharias and Patty Berg putting on the 18th. He said the club hosted the Womens Invitational in early 1930%26#39;s. After the Depression, the City of Aiken took the course until 1959 when his father purchased it. It%26#39;s been ';in the family'; ever since.

The greens are Ross style w/ undulation; they are difficult, but fair. Lots of sand waste areas , pot bunkers, and huge pines that are well over 100 yrs old. It meanders thru a beautiful old neighborhood blocks ffrom downtown. I loved it because it was so unpretentious and friendly. If you like hidden gems, this is one.

this is an excellent golf course. as the poster stated, tough but fair. my sentimetns exactly. the staff idshelpful and friendly, and the place is well kept up and a delight to play. especially at local prices, a bargain!!!!!
