hello everybody
my wife and I are looking to relocate from ny to the charleston area.
some of the reasons are that the property and the school taxs are
extreamly high, taxs rise every year.we are raising 3 children and
we are concerned about a quality education.I have been looking in
the summerville area. Iam a automotive technician with chevrolet
here in ny and will be looking for the same work there. I have some
questions:
What are some other areas of charleston that is good to raise
a family that is affordable? We are a single income family of about $53,000 a year until the youngest starts school.
Can anybody give me a idea of what taxs would be on a average
home? ( i.e. 3-4 beds 1700sqft. 1/3 - 1/4 acre lot)
What do some of you consider affordable houses in this area?
I would greatly appricate any info that anybody could give,we are
looking to move either the spring of 07 or spring of 08 working
around school of course and when are house here is rear for
market.
thanks

Have you checked out this website:

Summerville is in Dorchester Co. which is different than Charleston/Charleston Co. I%26#39;ll be honest--you%26#39;ll be hard pressed to survive in Charleston Co on $53k. Housing has gotten outrageous; property taxes too (you%26#39;ll pay upwards of $3k-$4k on the size home you%26#39;re looking at; add insurance, etc.
I%26#39;m not sure about the schools in the Summerville area. I hear that the schools upstate (Greenville area) are thriving.
Perhaps others will jump in as you really need to do your homework.
Good luck.

looking to relocate from upstate new yorkYou need to keep in mind that the pay in SC is lower. I would be highly surprised if you could get the same salary here as in NY. Also, SC more than likely has fewer car dealerships than NY. Dorchester County where Summerville is located isn%26#39;t all that big and most of it is rural. Finding employment might prove difficult. Like many people in Summerville you might find yourself having to commute for work to other areas.
As far as homes go, Dorchester and Berkeley Counties are still the most affordable in the area, but even home prices in these areas has risen and remain on the increase due to the continued growth. Taxes and fees here keep going up as well to pay for the new schools and infrastructure. Dorchester District 2 which is known for the better schools have become overcrowded, not to mention the roadways. New schools are being built, but it is still not enough. New roads are planned but it will be years before they are complete. Don%26#39;t mean to come off sounding like a downer, just telling you the facts. Hope it works out!
