Myrtle Beach/Surfside Beach Airports

I am firming up my plans and have 1 more dilema. We are staying in Surfside Beach. We can fly into Raleigh or Columbia. Columbia is a bit more but if it saves us a couple hours it would be well worth it. Is it 2 hours closer than RDU would be. Thanks for everyones help

Myrtle Beach/Surfside Beach Airports

Columbia is approx 2 hours from the MB area...and if you are staying in Surfside (which is just a bit south of MB) Columbia would be at least 2 hours closer, and alot smaller airport to get around in too!

A few ways you could go from Columbia to get to Surfside/MB....one is mostly interstate all the way and the other is a bit more direct shot, more of a state route ----

from CAE --- RT 378/77 to I-20 East, to Rt 76/301 (I-20 ends in Florence), stay on Rt 76 until you reach Rt 501 (just outside Marion)..you can catch Rt 544 off Rt 501 if you like to take a less traffic route into Surfside, but traffic shouldnt be bad this time of year...or you can take Rt 501 all the way to Rt 17 and head south on 17 to Surfside.

For the more direct route...just jump on Rt 378 (right there at the airport) and it will take you right into Rt 501 (as you approach Conway)...then you follow the above directions. Rt 378 passes Shaw Airforce Base there in Sumter, which can really be neat when some of the planes are making there approach or taking off!

you can go interstate most of the way....Rt 378/I-77 to I-20 East to Rt 76/301 (I-20 ends in florence) Stay on Rt 76 and it will run into Rt 501....you can catch Rt 544 off of Rt 501 to head into Surfside or stay on Rt501 to Rt 17 and then head south on Rt17 to Surfside.

If you prefer to use ';the backroads'; and see a bit of countryside (but still take about as long as the interstate) I%26#39;d take Rt 378 which you catch right out of the airport...stay on this until you run into Rt 501 (in Conway) and then you can use the above options to come into the beach!

One neat thing about Rt 378 is that it takes you thru Sumter (Shaw Airforce base) and you may see fighter jets make the approach or are taking off...and there are a number of cotton fields along the way.

:)

Sorry for the double posts....for some reason it came up blank...oh well...but you get the drift...

Maybe I am missing something, but why not fly into M. Beach airport? It is only 10-15 minutes or so from Surfside. M. Beach airport is South of downtown M. Beach it is actually closer to Surfside than it is downtown (the strip) M. Beach.

But, I agree with the 1st post---if you need to fly into Columbia it is a lot closer than Raleigh.

The airport in M. Beach is also small (we never flew into there, but have pick someone up from M. Beach airport) Hope you have fun

LuvMBeach...

I think alot of the reasoning for not flying into MYR (Myrtle Beach airport) is the cost factor, and no direct flights from almost anywhere (except Atlanta or Charlotte)....a number of people that do decide to fly with usually check other options, weigh the cost...and opt for flying into Columbia, Charlotte or Raleigh, then renting a car and driving the rest of the trip....afterall, most will rent a car here on arrival....guess it all works out a bit less $$$

:)

Thanks so much everyone for all your advice. Can you believe after all that One week before the flight the airline stopped flying nonstop and put us (and didn%26#39;t advise us) on a connection through Dallas. taking almost all of Christmas day after 2 hours on the phone I got flights switched to Raleigh a longer drive but at least it is nonstop. If any one has any driving secrets from Raleigh to Surfside beach I would appreciate it
