Golf on Dauduskie Island?

I will be in Hilton Head March 3rd thru March 10th, 2007. I will be staying in Palmetto Dunes and playing golf with my friends on the many beautiful courses in the area.

We would love to come over one day and play either Melrose of Bloody Point. Could you tell me if this is possible, how I would book tee times, how best to get there, and any other pertinent information you feel may help.

Thanks,

Tom Muhs

Hotels with indoor pools

Hi! My husband and I are planning on going to Myrtle Beach for the New Year but we are wondering if there are any hotels with indoor lazy rivers and swimming pools.

Can anyone help.

Thanks.

Krissy

Hotels with indoor pools

I would reccomend Coral Beach. It don%26#39;t have a indoor lazy river, but it has a huge pool, three hot tubs, bowling alley, and a bunch of more things to do.

Hotels with indoor pools

Thanks for your help. I do believe we have stayed there before and it is a great hotel.

Thanks again,

Krissy

Check out Ocean Reef, great place

I like that one. It looks great. Any other suggestions?

Thanks for your help.

Monteray Bay Suites, Sea Island Inn or Dunes Village....Located in an area that, IMO, is some of the best beach in the area!

:)

Thanks a lot for your help

Monterey Bay is a great hotel, but their lazy river may disappoint.

Four that will not are: The Landmark %26amp; Capatin%26#39;s Quarters (in the south end) %26amp; Long Bay or Carribean (in the north end)...I%26#39;m sure there are many others.

Happy New Year!

Crescent Shores in NMB

I think that Compass Cove may have an indoor lazy river. I don%26#39;t remember though.

If you stay there, stay in the pincipale building though because they just remoelded it.

Hilton Head/Savannah Best Places to Watch the NFL Playoffs

We are going to be staying at Hilton Head from 1/20/07 through 1/27/07. We are looking for the best bars/lounges/big screen/HAPPY HOURS to watch the NFL AFC/NFC Championship playoffs on 1/21/07. Any suggestions either in Hilton Head OR Savannah to get this accomplished? Also, while I am writing, any suggestions for seafood restaurants and nightlife in either place? Any assistance in these matters would be greatly appreciated.

  • Villas at Resort Quest

We are planning a stay on Kiawah in mid Feb. to celebrate one our 60th birthdays - we are four sisters. We have located an apparently lovely 4 bedroom oceanfront home for $300 per night. we understand the Villas at Resort Quest offer 2 bedroom villas for about $210. in the ocean area. Any info on this resort? Are the villas oceanfront? Does the 4 bedroom home sound reasonable to you who know more than we do about Kiawah?

    Villas at Resort Quest

ResortQuest is not a resort. It is a property management company. All the villas are owned by individual property owners that use RQ to rent and manage their villas. I%26#39;d watch out for the added fees with RQ. What seems to be $210/nt will probably run a lot more after taxes, fees, etc. For example, I have a villa on neighboring Seabrook Island that I rent out. My summer weekly rate is $1550 plus 10.5% tax. The same week rented through Resort Quest will cost a renter over $1800.

I suggest checking out vrbo.com or vacationrentals.com. These are ';rent by owner'; websites. Keep in mind that a stand alone home will probably give you more privacy and space than some of the villas.

    Eliza

    Villas at Resort Quest

Even in February, a four-bedroom oceanfront home for $300 per night seems reasonably priced for Kiawah, depending on the view and the specific amenities.

Everything on Kiawah is built behind the dune line. Even if the property is ocean front, it may not have a full ocean view if it is not elevated above the dunes. ';Ocean area'; is very close to the beach, but neither ocean view nor ocean front. Be sure to inquire.

ResortQuest manages lots of properties on Kiawah. Kiawah Island Golf Resort, Pam Harrington%26#39;s Kiawah Exclusives, andBeachwalker Rentals are other management companies. No matter who you rent from, ask in advance about additional fees and about cancellation policies.

Windcrest Villas or Windy Shores II ??

    Anyone stay at either place?

Windcrest Villas or Windy Shores II ??

Stayed at Windy Shores in the same room for years. What%26#39;s the question?

Windcrest Villas or Windy Shores II ??

I am thinking of staying at Windy Shores and would love any info you can give me. Is barefootlanding close? Any other atttractions? Are the buildings nice? Balcony private? Pool nice? Do you have any pics I could see? I have read that some were being renovated. I am thinking of going through Elliot Realty. Thanks for any information.

My family and I stayed there for several years in a third floor room. Our stay was done through Condo World. It is right at Barefoot Landing and one of the cool things about it was the fact that the road ended right at it, so there was no traffic barrelling down the street. The downside...and it%26#39;s a big one...is the parking. There is not enough spaces for all the tenants so there%26#39;s an overflow lot a BLOCK from it. Parking is not good at all. It%26#39;s a traditional (wood) condo but has an elevator. It%26#39;s nice enough but parking got to be such a hassle that we ended up not going back a year or so ago. The pool was nice. It was relatively quiet. The beach was a good one as well, since the parasailers were right out front. We did that a couple of times.

Thanks for the information. The barefootlanding area is great but you do have me wondering about the parking now..... I am not sure I want to park my car a block down. When did you usually go there? We were thinking spring but we may change our mind to Sept now. Maybe that would help with the parking.

We stay at Windyshores 2. Parking is tight at times. Never had to use overflow. Returning late gets you to over flow. Which is only 300%26#39; away. Nice clean complex. Good value for the money. Great pool area. Last condo in Windy hill. End of road. Vacant land to the North. Beach not too crowded. Banana boats, jet skis and para sailing in front of vacant land. Middle of June for us. easy to get to.

WindyShores 1 is next door. It is a smaller complex.

    northmyrtlebeachtravel.com/book/house.html…

This is Elliott Realty%26#39;s link to Windy ShoresII. Under the name Windy Shores is an icon for ';Map It';. Click on it and you%26#39;ll get ariel view of the building and what%26#39;s around it.

Open area to the right or north of Windy Shores is Atlantic Beach section. Undeveloped beach front. Windy Shores is probably the least crowded stretch of beach in NMB.

Scroll the the left or south a couple blocks you%26#39;ll see Windcrest Villas.

  • Marriott's Oceanwatch Villas????

Are they building another pool supposedly with slide?

    How is the beach there?

Can you use Marriott Hotel facilities as well?

    Thanks

    Marriott's Oceanwatch Villas????

I%26#39;m not for sure what their plans are with the additional pool facilities..I do know that there is quite a bit of construction around that area tho%26#39;.....as for the beach...is really nice! IMO, one of the best beach areas along the Strand....the beach in that area runs from approx 84th Ave N to 31st Ave N...so you have over 5 miles of mostly uninterrupted beach....just one swash area near 67th Ave N...great area to swim, hunt for shells and sharks teeth!

    :)

    Marriott's Oceanwatch Villas????

They are building another pool with a slide...

The beach is very nice in that area...

You can use the hotel facilities for a fee, currently $10 for a single day pass...

The construction is done in the front.. now are doing prep work for two new buildings in the back -- as well as the indoor pool... Overall construction is not bad at ALL at this time.

    surfsidebeach

/have inside info.. hope it helped!

What part of N.j. are you from? Im from Sayreville.

This area of Myrtle Beach is my personal favorite. All the way down to 45th is great.

    Best Western Grand Strand

Hey everyone! I am coming down to Myrtle Beach in April and staying at Best Western Grand Strand. I was wondering if there was any bars within walking distance and also somewhere to eat within walking distance of the hotel.

    Best Western Grand Strand

Myrtle Beach has hundreds of bars. My concern with you ';walking'; is the particular area the hotel is in. Late at night on South OB, is not particularly, safest area of MB. If you are talking about the day time, one thing, but late at night. Also, that side of the Pavilion you will not find as many ';bars'; within walking distance. You either have to go North OB past the pavilion area, or Business 17, Broadway at the Beach. That particular area is in transition, you will find very old Mom and Pop hotels, some that are already boarded up waiting to be torn down for new condo development, some newer resorts, and block over from South OB, a much older part of MB.

    Best Western Grand Strand

You have a number of options across the street from the BW Grand Strand....just about any of the OF hotels will have a bar area, with many of those being right on the beach. Coral Beach (which is less than 1/4 mile from the BW) has a great little OF Bar, with some decent entertainment. I do agree that REAL late at night (after midnight) it may not be the best place to walk around...especially by yourself, but thats the case in most major resorts anywhere you go...just use good judgement and you%26#39;ll be fine. You will find a number of restaurants approx 4 blocks inland along Kings Hwy. Villa Romana...my fav Italian restaurant....is located at 7th Ave South on Kings Hwy...that would be close to a mile walking...but you can always take the trolley up Ocean Blvd to 7th Ave then walk the 4 blocks to Kings Hwy....so keep in mind...the bus system we have here is a great, cheap option for transportaion up and down Ocean Blvd.

    MB TV commercials......

I live in the NE and this is the first year I%26#39;ve seen TV commercials soliciting visitors to MB. They just started %26amp; are geared to snowbirds, golfers %26amp; winter getaway planners.

I have mixed feelings about this because I like the uncrowded winters....maybe they will soon be a memory.

    MB TV commercials......

And so do the locals! :)

Its a double edged sword...in a way...as most hotels and condos take this ';down time'; to refresh everything...so makes me curious as to how and when they will continue to ';keep things nice';.

But then on the other hand, with all the building of new resorts, and everybody has to be larger and grander then the last...you do one of tow things, have more folks visit us during ';season'; (YIKES!!) or extend that season.....

the way the weather has been the last week or so...I wonder WHAT season it is! It%26#39;s like spring golf weather! :)

    :)

    MB TV commercials......

I%26#39;ve noticed the same thing here in Ohio recently. I%26#39;ve probably seen 15 Myrtle Beach commercials in the last couple of weeks on television.

me to......dont need the traffic in the winter. however i have notice that in the past few years the traffic is still a problem in areas around the beach.

The add I saw offered a free tank of gas. Tourism drives the Grand Strand, so naturally, they will try and get additional revenues during %26#39;off-season%26#39;. Winters will mostly attract %26#39;snowbirds%26#39; for long term rentals or families more (NC piedmont area) for a quick weekend getaway. I visit the North Myrtle area frequently during off season and the traffic is almost non existent compared to summer months.

Place to stay for family of 14

We usually rent a house at Outer Banks but want to try something different. We would like to have more things to do as some kids are teens. We could rent 2 condos. What is a good house rental agency, or a fun resort that isn%26#39;t too crowded. We want to go in June. Also, what about Litchfield beach or Ocean Isle. That seems to be popular in richmond virginia.

Place to stay for family of 14

Only experience with Ocean Isle has been to visit friends who were in area same week we were. First visit we were impressed. Nothing but houses and low frame style condo buildings. No highrise buildings. Reminded me of NMB in the 60%26#39;s.

Last trip to OI it looked over developed. When we crossed the bridge over to island it looked like you could walk the length of the island on the roof tops. Still no large buildings but it looked like a quilt with all the multi colored roofs spread out in front of you.

Don%26#39;t get me wrong. It%26#39;s a nice place. Just depends on what you%26#39;re used to or looking for.

Not a fraction of the things to do as you would find a little farther south in MB and surrounding area. 45-60 minute drive to MB attractions.

Several areas to pick from around MB. Something for everybody no matter what you%26#39;re looking for.

North Myrtle Beach is seperate city 10 miles north of MB. The north end of MB around Kings Road has become very popular. Downtown MB is the favorite with the teens. Can get a bit congested. Then you have tthe areas south of MB. Surfside, Garden City, Murrell%26#39;s Inlet and Pawley%26#39;s Island.

Most of your house selections are to the south and north of MB. The Pawley%26#39;s Island and Murrell%26#39;s Inlet areas would probably be your most quiet and laid back location. 20-30 minute drive to attractions.

Most of your houses in NMB are in the Cherry Grove section. Not as quiet as PI and MI but still not as congested as MB. Still enough going on that kids aren%26#39;t bored. 20-30 minutes to main MB attractions.

Here are two sites for NMB.

    northmyrtlebeachtravel.com/book/query.html

    http://www.century21thomas.com/sitemap.htm

Most people want oceanfront. If that%26#39;s not all that important you might look at the channel houses. Some of those come with pools and equiped with game rooms.

There are a few four and five bedroom condos in the area.

Place to stay for family of 14

century21thomas has a lot of beach house choices.......vrbo.com would have several that would accomodate 14. Ocean Isle is nice but if you%26#39;re looking an Outter Banks change, you may need to come further south.

If you are wanting a change from OB, then North MB(Cherry Grove or Windy Hill) or MB would be preferable because it will be a total change. If you chose MB I would not stay directly ';downtown'; as it is very crowded and noisy, meaning the area closest to the old ';Pavilion';, it is being torn down but it is certainly a landmark if you are checking maps. If you are looking for middle ground, then Ocean Isle, Pawley%26#39;s, Litchfield are much quieter areas, but still close enough if you want to come to MB for the day you can. North Myrtle Beach is quieter than MB, Garden City is also an option south of MB. There are NO shortages of rental property in this area, even for 14 people.

I agree that www.vrbo.com is a great site when looking for larger properties....and since you are renting directly from the owners, the rate always seem to be a bit better.

Some of the larger condo/hotel resorts do have 3 and 4 bedroom condos (Dunes Village is brand new and has these)...there are a few beach houses in one of my fav areas of the beach (82nd Ave N to 31st Ave N). I like the beach in this area, plus I find it to be pretty centrally located to a number of our local attractions. Do keep in mind that June is the beginning of our heaviest season....so traffic will become a factor in getting from point A to point B. Rt 17 heading south into the Garden City/Surfside Beach area can be a nightmare at times --- and this is on Rt 17 Bypass or Business 17. I do like the Pawleys Isle/Litchfield area....really laidback and relaxed and if your plans are to beach bum it for the week, its a great area..with some wonderful places to eat too!

Another site for house rentals in the MB area is www.booerealty.com. I know they have had some negative comments on this forum, but I have personally used them to house relatives during a wedding here, and they were wonderful to work with.

    Happy hunting!

    :)

If you decide on North Myrtle Beach, Elliott Realty has fantastic selection of beach houses that would meet your needs. Web site was posted earlier at northmyrtlebeachtravel.com Cherry Grove is my preferred area.

  • Holiday Inn - Is Kevin McQuade Gone?

Based upon the last review and a friend who just came back, I am told that Concierge Kevin McQuade is gone!

Say it isn%26#39;t so! If he is gone this becomes just another Charleston Hotel soon to drop-off the the list of top U.S. Hotels on tripadvisor.com.

Anyone know where he went? Another Charleston hotel?

Holiday Inn - Is Kevin McQuade Gone?

Thank you for your concern about my whereabouts! I%26#39;m very flattered. However, I am happy to report that I am still at the Holiday Inn Historic District as the concierge and plan to be here for many years to come!!

I think what happened is that I went on vacation for a couple of weeks in November and then, shortly after I got back, came down with a horrible case of the flu that put me in bed for almost a week! So, unfortunately, I wasn%26#39;t here alot in November for anybody that was looking for me for my help. But I%26#39;m now fully recovered and looking to help as many people as I can to find the ';magic'; of Charleston!!

    Kevin McQuade

    Chief Concierge

    Holiday Inn Historic District

    Charleston, South Carolina

Holiday Inn - Is Kevin McQuade Gone?

I%26#39;m glad to see Kevin%26#39;s reply that he is still there. Not only was he invaluable during our stay, but so was Jeremy, the van driver, who also gave us excellent advice, as well as excellent service.

Since Charleston has the odd circumstance of not being able to hail cabs, it was great to have a driver%26#39;s cell phone number. We called Jeremy when we asked for our check at dinner, and by time we had paid for our meal, he was there to pick us up and take us back to the Holiday Inn. We also called him after walking around looking at historic homes, after attending performances during Spoleto, etc. He claims he doesn%26#39;t work 24/7, but it seemed so to us.

    lol.

May I join the chuckle, gnodule? So obvious.

    Breakers Paradise Towers

Has anyone stayed in the 3 bedroom-3 bath superior condo listed as Unit Z?

    Breakers Paradise Towers

We stayed in the 2BR 2BA Superior Suite. They are the same just an extra bed and bath. These aren%26#39;t like ';condo-condo%26#39;s';. It%26#39;s still a hotel.

Loved it Loved it Loved it. Very Clean, comfortable.

It had huge rooms and bathrooms. Full Kitchen and it was fully stocked with utensils and equipment. Even a mixer, bakeware, pots and pans, etc.

LR was a nice with a couch and 2 wing chairs. DR had a table that sat 6. The ';Superior'; part of it is that you get a floor to ceiling glass window of the beach and side/back of the hotel. Beautiful. I loved it loved it loved it. Oh and the balcony off of the Master BR was nice as well.

Best hotel with 2 young kids??

HELP!!! im sooo confused! We will be traveling end of august with a 4 yr old and a 1 yr old.. first timers.. want a NICE place, good location and SAFE. I was thinking Coral Beach but after reading reviews of the South end Im worried...

Best hotel with 2 young kids??

I%26#39;d suggest taking a look at vrbo.com and North Myrtle Beach. Things start to slow a little in late August but the Grand Strand is still packed. North Myrtle Beach (the city) has much better crime statistics than Myrtle Beach. Myrtle Beach is a great place but facts are facts and if I wanted to stay in Myrtle, I would.

    http://www.areaconnect.com/crime/compare.htm?c1=Myrtle+Beach%26amp;s1=SC%26amp;c2=North+Myrtle+beach%26amp;s2=SC

Best hotel with 2 young kids??

Since you have little ones, I would think you are more interested in enjoying the beach and pool and not necessarily other forms of entertainment that being in MB itself provides. I agree with ';gone'; North MB, Cherry Grove section are very family oriented. There are nice resorts, nice condo%26#39;s/houses for rent. North MB will offer everything you could possibly want or need.

might try avista resort in north myrtle beach.

Thank you for your advice! I appreciate you taking the time. So is Coral beach out of the question? Is N. Myrtle near the amuzement parks? and any suggestions of where to stay in north??? THANKS AGAIN

This is my opinion like the other posters- we believe you would like North MB better, I would tell my friends not to stay at a South Ocean Blvd address. We have one amusement park called Family Kingdom, it is located on South OB. Pavillion is being torn down. Broadway at the Beach has a small childrens area with several smaller rides, I would suggest that area over Family Kingdom. There is construction going on everywhere in MB, you really can%26#39;t get away from that. South OB has alot of older mom/pop hotels, many of them closed waiting to be torn down and high rises built. Its not the prettiest section of grand strand. With small children, North Myrtle Beach, Cherry Grove area for your first trip would be a good choice. You can always drive around and check out other locations. You can drive down to south OB, look at Coral Beach, I suggest you, if you do drive down South, you check out the area 1 block off of Ocean Blvd (not at night) just to see what we are talking about.

wow... you guys are SOOO HELPFUL!! thanks!! So Avista seems nice... and Dunes? any others I should check out??

You might take a look at some of the resorts in the Avenues area, Monteray Bay Suites (includes a breakfast buffet and evening dessert reception in room rate) Grande Shores, Long Bay, Marriott Grande Dunes, Sea Island (know known as Island Vista --- opened last season), Forest Dunes, South Wind Villas or Dunes Village. Most of these complexes have nice pool areas for the kids and the beach, IMO, is one of the best in the area. Very well guarded too, which is important with little ones.

As for the crime in MB according to one of the above posters --- in the north end of MB a number of the locals still dont lock there doors --- crazy isnt it? Most of the crime happens more in the downtown area, or an area we know locally as Racepath, which is a pretty improverished area ridden with drugs and gangs. Common sense will keep you from going into those areas, just like I would%26#39;nt be in the south side of Chicago at 1am either.....

Coral Beach is a decent place....recently refurbished, alot of amenities. You should check out some of the comments from people who have stayed there off to the left of this forum. The south end isnt all boarded up....yes it is definately in a transition, but a number of those properties will be completed with their comstruction by the time season rolls around. It is the ';older'; part of MB....I wouldnt stay anywhere near the old Pavillon area, say from 15th Ave N to about 5th Ave S...that a pretty rough area hotel wise...

    Good luck in you search!

    :)

Thank you! What is IMO? You said its one of the best?

';IMO'; mean in my opinion...always like to clarify that! LOL But the beach around that area is really nice....and a great place to look for shells or sharks teeth!

    :)

HAHAHHAHHAA THANKS.... new oviously to this... IMO.. thought it was some great resort.....

One thing to consider...most golf courses are a short drive. While in the Grand Strand, you could get very reasonable accomodations right on the ocean vs. on the golf course.

I accidently left out Barefoot Dye..........I%26#39;d put the top group as the best and the others are very good and in no particular order.

    Peter,

Are you flying over the pond to play Myrtle?

All of your course selections are top courses. Based on you staying at Barefoot Resorts there will be a lengthy trip to get to True Blue and Caledonia. If that might be an issue you can consider something on the 501 corridor, or possibly something slightly north of where you are staying. There are so many great courses - why bother spending some of your precious time on the road....

    Try this recommendation:

    Barefoot - Fazio

    Barefoot - Love or Dye

    World Tour

    Legends Heathland or Moorland

    Tidewater

    Heather Glen

Also, Barefoot and Legends have multiple courses and would suit your purposes if you plan to play 36 on a particular day.

Good Luck, and HIT EM STRAIGHT!

    Caledonia is WORTH the drive!!!!

Drive to Myrtle Beach from Orlando

We have a villa in Florida (www.evansvilla.co.uk just incase anyone on here interested in renting it) and are going to stay at our villa this July. My daughter has just got a job in the Palace Theatre show Le Grande Cirqcue show, and we want to visit her while in Orlando. Has anyone ever driven from Myrtle Beach to Orlando, and if so how long would it take. Is it better to fly and if so how much is the air fare.

    Sue

Drive to Myrtle Beach from Orlando

MB to Disneyworld is approximately 10 hour drive, and that is going with the flow of traffic on I-95, which is more like driving the autobahn, the posted speed limit of 70 is merely a suggestion. 90 mph is more like it. Orlando to MB, flights should be rather reasonable and the airport is less than 5 mins from the Palace theater.

Drive to Myrtle Beach from Orlando

I have driven to and from Orlando from Myrtle Beach several times. In fact I%26#39;m in Myrtle Beach now and leaving in about 2 hours to drive to Orlando! Much depends upon when you are travelling. Since you will definitely need a car while you are in Myrtle Beach you may want to consider driving. Also depends upon your budget. Airline costs depend on when you are travelling as well. Myrtle Beach airport is very conveniently located, although it is more than a 5 minute drive from Palace. July is peak time in MB so you will have LOTS of traffic here. You can%26#39;t get anywhere quickly during July. Have you already found a place to stay while you are here? If not, try vrbo.com. As I said, July is peak time and places fill up very quickly.

I drove from Orlando last spring (through Daytona 500 traffic!) and it took about 9 hours. Although I prefer driving the Autobahn, the speeds on 95 are not as fast as the Autobahn. Sure wish they were!

WELL NO its not as fast as the autobahn, but in comparison to other interstates, when I drive 95 it is never under 85-90 and to Orlando going with the flow of traffic its more like 90-95. I was not meaning it literally.

amazing someone from ny knows more that someone who lives here everyday. ..........im with you on this one magiccat

I%26#39;ve driven from Smithfield, NC to Orlando in 9 hours and that%26#39;s a hour further than Myrtle would be! I freely admit I was going well over the speed limit and travelled at night when 95 traffic was way down. 11PM - 8AM.......... I looked up a round trip by air ($210-400)

i guess I should have been specific, North Myrlte Beach close to NC line, to Disney World All Star Resort, that was about 10 hours, little under. So where are you leaving from and where are you going to in Myrtle Beach, that could mean an hours difference or more. I would fly, if your daughter lives here I am assuming she has a car and you can use it while you are here.

Thanks everyone for their comments and information. I think that we will rethink the driving bit as 9 or 10 hours is a bit too long to spend driving during the 2 week vacation we have in Orlando. We will probably look at getting a domestic flight as the airport is so near the theatre.

My daughter does not have use of a car, but may have by the time she has been there 6 months. Despite what people think, dancers and entertainers do not get much money and I am not sure she will be able to run one while there. As we live in the UK she will not be able to bring her own car out to the US for the duration, which is a shame as she is used to being mobile.

    Sue

A rental car for length of time you are here would not be too much, or just take a cab/bus.

90 to 95mph on average? I%26#39;ve never seen that...

We drive I-95 in FL with a truck slide camper %26amp; stick to about 60-65 to save gas. The first time I was worried about getting ';run off the road'; in FL but to our surprise, it seemed drivers were going a little slower in FL than in GA. My wife said maybe it%26#39;s because there%26#39;s so many seniors living there.

Can you drive 90-95mph? Sure, in the left lanes, but if you prefer to stick closer to the speed limit, you will be safe (and have plenty of company) in the right lanes. (This kinda blows the ';but officer, EVERYBODY was going that fast'; excuse.)

Just returned from Orlando today. And by the way, I may have a NY address but I also have a home in MB and have been coming here for over 15 years. My youngest son lives here as well. My oldest son will be getting married here in August and thanks to all the great folks on this site we were able to set up everything in 1 week!

As for the drive. I left Orlando (we were staying at the Hilton Grand Vacation Club at Seaworld) at 10am. We arrived in MB at 7pm. We stopped a total of 1 hour for gas and lunch. Traffic was moderate, some construction but nothing that required us to stop. We took 4 East and then 95 north to Florence, a small drive through the town and we picked up 501. Average speed was 68 mph. Jam packed mini van with 4 travellers is not the time to be testing how fast the car can go!

As for flying, we are a total of 9 family members and both drive and fly here on a regular basis. If you can get a reasonable rate for flying and don%26#39;t mind renting a car that is surely an option. I would not recommend you being here without a car. Attractions are far apart and it%26#39;s too hot in July to consider walking anywhere of great length.

Having spent 2 weekends of every month since September flying I%26#39;d rather drive. At least I can control my schedule and not feel like a cow in a herd of unloved cattle. Jut yesterday my husband left Orlando for Syracuse, NY and didn%26#39;t get in till nearly 1am. (He was at the airport 3 hours early with 1 piece of luggage and just made his flight) Lots of excuses from the airlines, although weather wasn%26#39;t an issue. However, I can say that Myrtle Beach is a nice little airport and has many friendly people working there.

So, there you are! Hope all of our suggestions have been helpful!

I am researching a week long family vacation that would involve 4 families and 17 people. 9 of the 17 are kids ranging in age from 8 to 18. We want to be on the beach in a nice area. I am thinking a house rental might be ideal. A pool at the house would be terrific. None of us have ever been to Myrtle Beach and I am sure I can find lots of information using the web about things to do there. My main concern at this point is the housing aspect. Does anyone have recommendations about places they have stayed at that they were happy with or maybe even places to avoid? Cleanliness, location and amenities are all important.

I saw some posts with links to web sites and I appreciate those as well as others people can let me know about. But I am REALLY interested in your personal experiences at some of these houses. Come on trip advisor forum contributors......give us the straight scoop! :)

    Rental Homes

Most of your houses will be north or south of MB proper. To the south you have Garden City, Surfside, Murrell%26#39;s Inlet and Pawley%26#39;s Island. Stretches out maybe 10-20 miles south of MB depending on where you draw the line. Farther south you go the more quiet and laid back it gets. Lots of restaurants in that area. Easy approx 20-30 minute drive to MB attractions.

Some houses in the north end area of MB. Not sure of how big the selection is. Would be closer to attractions. Traffic and congestion is heavier in this area. Others can hook you up with realtors in those two areas.

10-15 miles to the north of MB is the city of NMB. 20-30 minutes to attractions. Two largest realtors in that area are Elliott and Thomas Century 21.

    northmyrtlebeachtravel.com/book/query.html

    http://www.century21thomas.com/sitemap.htm

Both have large selections of houses. Also can check out VRBO.

    vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/…north-myrtle-beach

Has been several years since I%26#39;ve rented a house. Would say the two realtor companies have pretty high standards for maintenance and quality. You wouldn%26#39;t be disappointed with anything they offer.

A few oceanfront houses have pools. Might consider looking at a multi unit building. Would have three to four smaller rentals. Each family could have their own unit.

Might look at channel houses in Cherry Grove. Most are fairly new. A lot of them have pools. Some have game rooms. Fishing off back dock in the marsh. Short walk to beach.

Also Elliott has listing for Aces Wild. Oceanfront. Looks like condo building but listed under houses. Four huge units. Each unit sleeps approx 26. Six beds. Six and half baths. Pool, hot tub and game room.

Main thing to compare will be price. Bigger the house, the more ammenities, the closer to the beach, higher the rate.

Have fun shopping for a place.

    Rental Homes

I have not rented a beach home in several years in the Grand Strand but I know Century 21 Thomas has several they rent. There not nearly as many large rental homes in this area as at the Outer Banks of NC around Buxton. I could recommend several there or Hatteras Realty. I%26#39;ve stayed in a few that would easily accomodate 20 with private pools, hot tubs, tennis and basketball courts, large screen TVs, pools tables, game rooms, DVD collections, xbox, large decks on every floor... A couple had elevators. There%26#39;s lots of nice beach homes between Ocean Drive and Cherry Grove in the Tilghman section but I don%26#39;t know where most rent through. Elliott Realty has some of them in a Luxury rental section.

    Hoosier,

Try Booe Realty, I believe you can Google them and view their online offerings......

We just found a rental house in Garden City for $1200 for the week. MOST less then being in MB proper. We only have 7 of us coming. Not sure about finding a place big enough for that many. I would really agree with the others in going through a real estate company who can help you find the right place.

Driving to Myrtle Beach from St. Louis ~ any advice?

We are planning on coming to MB the first week in June. We are driving from St. Louis. Is there any advise you can give me on where to stop along the way. What placed to avoid. Right now we are thinking of stopping and staying the night in Knoxville. Then finish the drive the next day.

Driving to Myrtle Beach from St. Louis ~ any advice?

Welcome, I am from St. Louis, Lindbergh HS. Anyway, I have lived in SC since 1986. Knoxville probably is a good bet to spend the night, I recommend you coming down the IL side to Paducah, then to Nashville to Knxoville, I am guessing about 6-7 hr drive, actually if you can stand it the next hour and half out of Knoxville thru the mountains is a hard drive, probably to me hardest part of the trip. Once you get outside Asheville on I-26 to SC, then road flattens. If you don%26#39;t stay in Knoxville, drive little further stay in Newport TN or go on to Asheville, not many accomodations between Newport and Asheville, that I would recommend. Once on I-26, go to Columbia, take I-20 to Florence, at Florence take I-95 North (Fayetteville) go about 10 miles to exit 170 (I believe that is the number) it says Myrtle Beach, take that exit, it will change road numbers couple of times but you will end up on Hwy 501 to Conway. WHERE ARE YOU STAYING, that will depend what road outside AYNOR you take. IF you are staying anywhere North or even in Myrtle Beach, I STRONGLY recommend you take I-22 out of Aynor to Myrtle Beach. You can get on Hwy 31 off of 22 and it will take you North and South. UNLESS you are a total glutton for punishment, do not take Hwy 501 thru Conway to beach!. Let me know if I can help further

Driving to Myrtle Beach from St. Louis ~ any advice?

We are actually renting a house in Garden City. The map I have says to take 501! So please let me know is there an easier route to take. We are bringing a teenager and a small toddler with us. So stopping in Knoxville is what we are planning as we want to go through the mountains during the day.

    Thanks for the info!

I understand small children, and all, besides seeing the mountains during the day is nicer and safer.

Garden City. My suggestion is to stil take I-22 outside of Aynor, to Hwy 31 S, stay on 31. (MBConceirge what exit to Garden City) I hardly ever go south anymore. Anyway, there are few exits off of 31, (Hwy 544 has exit and that might be your best choice) do not exit 501 off of 31 . It may look longer on the map, but trust me you DO NOT UNDER ANY circumstances want to drive thru Conway unless you are coming early in the morning. It will be bumper to bumper for hours in the summer. The first week in June is Senior Week. But staying in Garden City will not be an issue.

One more thing, East side of Knoxville is Strawberry Plains exit, nice Hampton Inn there. I want to say exit 398 but not sure on that one, only Strawberry Plains Pike exit off 40. I also lived in East TN for year half, outside of Knoxville. I suggest you try to get thru Knoxville, lots of road construction and morning traffic can be bad, at least if you are on East side you won%26#39;t have a problem, you will have smooth sailing for long time, you exit before you get into Asheville, although at 5pm Asheville will have alot of traffic on I-40 and I-26. I have put many miles on my car driving I-40 and I-26.

Thanks! We are staying at a Super 8 in West Knoxville because we are bringing our dog with us. Hampton Inn won%26#39;t allow the dog in the room. That is another reason why we are staying in Garden City because MB won%26#39;t let the dog on the beach till after 5. So we will do the beach in Garden City and play in MB.

Gotcha! It will be a long drive for sure, but you will enjoy yourself when you get here. Garden City is a nice area, we use to stay down there.

I agree with Kat on stopping somewhere before you get to the mountains in and around Asheville...especially if you arent used to driving in that area. Plus it is such a pretty area to see during the daytime! There are a number of places just south of Knoxville...near the factory outlets there...not sure of the exit number tho (sorry)....

As for coming into the beach...in June...I%26#39;d come in on Rt 501 to Aynor...then take Rt 22 to Rt 31 South....you will stay on that until it ends and dumps onto Rt 544....take Rt544 towards Surfside. You have a few options here.....you can stay on Rt 544 until you reach Rt 17 Bypass (this will put you on the Bypass near an area that we call the ';Backgate'; -- old Air Force Base). Depending on the time of day...this area can be really congested.....you can take Rt 544 to Rt 707 which winds around and is 2 lane alot of the way, but still kinda pretty....this will dump onto Rt 17 almost at Garden City.

Have a safe trip and alot of fun!

    :)

Planning to Tour Greenville, Spartanburg, & Anderson

Hello! I%26#39;m planning to tour Greenville, Spartanburg, and Anderson later this month to see if any of these cities might be an ideal place for my family to relocate. I%26#39;m hoping to receive from recommendations on what to check out in each city. Greenville%26#39;s downtown sounds like it%26#39;s worth seeing. How about Spartanburg%26#39;s %26amp; Anderson%26#39;s?

I%26#39;m not sure about neighborhoods to drive through either. When I tried to investigate real estate prices in Greenville, I found more listings in Simpsonville, Greer, and Easley than in Greenville. Are these fairly close ';suburbs';?

It seems like Greenville might have more to offer than Spartanburg, just based on my preliminary research. Anderson has a definite ';small town'; appeal and it seems really close to Lake Hartwell. Do people actually live on the lake %26amp; commute to Anderson to work?

I%26#39;d really appreciate any advice %26amp; must see recommendations from any of the three cities. Any other info you might have to offer on the area would also be greatly appreciated. I will be able to find employment in any of the three. I would be working in the medical community. So, I%26#39;d like to live pretty close to the hospitals. Our limit on a home would an absolute high of $500,000. I figure you might need that info to make neighborhood recommendations. I%26#39;ll be looking for an area with good schools or close to a Catholic School.

Thanks so much for any help you can offer. I feel like I%26#39;ll be pressed to see all three areas in a weekend, and any guidance that will make the tour more smooth is priceless in my book.

Planning to Tour Greenville, Spartanburg, %26amp; Anderson

Also, I%26#39;d love to hear your personal thoughts on why one area might be better than the others, etc. Personal opinions definitely matter to me.

Planning to Tour Greenville, Spartanburg, %26amp; Anderson

Forgive the VERY long post but its a HUGE area

I cant give you info on the Spartanburg area since I dont travel there much. Spartanburg is ok but yes Greenville has more to offer- in my opinion, than Anderson or Spartanburg.

The upstate in general is really growing. www.greenvilleonline.com and www.wyff.com are two websites to get a feel of issues in the area.

You can certainly buy yourself an excellent home between the 300,000 to 500,000 range. Actually even below that price point depending on what you are looking for in regards to construction quality and location.

Lots of variety- you can live in a more rural/farm area or closer to more development.

    Catholic Schools:

There are 2 main ones that I know of.

    1. Saint Mary%26#39;s Downtown: http://www.stmarysgvl.org/

    2. Saint Josephs close to 85 and to Mauldin/Simpsonville/Downtown Greenville area: http://www.sjcatholicschool.org/

I have heard positive things about both. Good reputations. I believe there might be some smaller schools but I cant think of them right now.

    Downtown:

10-15 years ago Greenville%26#39;s downtown wasn’t safe enough, in my opinion, to walk down the street in daylight. Now, they have done sooo much. The area around ';The West end'; has and is currently undergoing a massive facelift. Downtown is worth a trip- small shops, the falls, art, the new baseball stadium, places to eat... it isn’t overwhelming in size but very nice. Jaded me has actually been very impressed with what the city has done.

Also a small zoo and parks downtown.

You can live actually downtown in a condo but it is very expensive for very little square footage. Houses around downtown are older construction and expensive.

If you are a person who loves the quirks of an old home the area around downtown is a great place. Less likely to find any new construction going on here but there is some.

    Area around the hospitals:

Ok so Greenville has 2 major hospital systems. Greenville Hospital System with its five branches (the big daddy of the area) and the smaller Saint Francis which as 2 main campuses. One close to downtown and the woman%26#39;s hospital closer to the Greer side of Greenville and near Haywood Mall and 385.

You can google both hospitals and get info on them.

More rural hospitals exist but those are the main ones for the area.

( ohh there is the other biggie- Spartanburg Regional Medical )

The medical industry is big and growing here. Depending on what you do you should have any problem finding a job.

    The Augusta road area:

This where a lot of doctors reside who practice at the main GHS campus . Close to both 385 and 85 the main arteries. This is the older area of town. And not a bad old. Lots of mature oaks and less ';planned neighborhoods'; if you understand what I mean. Property can be very expensive here. Very close to downtown and good schools.

    Commuting:

Commuting is basically very easy. I know lots of folks that live in Easley and commute to Greenville or live in Spartanburg commute. You have lots of choices. Find a good realtor to give you the pros and cons of each area. Example, if you live in Greenville city limits you are looking at higher taxes. It all depends on your tastes.

Greenville County is HUGE and has the largest school district in the state. It includes the biggies like Greenville (city), Greer, Simpsonville, and Mauldinto name some main areas.

    Easley

In Pickens County- less developed in regards so shopping and such and has a small townish feel

    Anderson

Only now starting to expand but not as much as Greenville area. Not much of a medical industry either in Lower quality of life. Not a BAD area but it has parts that are umm country. If you are interested in having a farm its great.

    Others:

The area around Clemson is also growing. Near the lakes and mountains. Lots of folks are retiring here. Very pretty. People working for the university seem to either live near Clemson or in Greenville.

    Simpsonville/Mauldin area:

A BOOMING area. Lots of NEW home construction. Couple years ago there wasnt much out there. If you lived out there you had to drive 20-35 minutes to get to anything. Now, there is lots of development. Housing is reasonable in that area (but I dont look too often). Still a reasonable drive to Greenville.

Woodruff Road is THE place right now and a stones throw from this area and from Greenville.

    Recap of Greenville area

    Greenville: more urban/developed

Greer- basically part of Greenville- closer to Spartanburg

Simpsonville- one word Growing, former farm land

Easley outer skirts of Greenville, less urban more rural and in Pickens

Anderson- also growing but more rural than all above.

If you have a more specific question let me know. I will try to help :)

    Dressage04

Guess Im pushing Greenville more than anything.

    Few more websites

    http://www.greatergreenville.com/

    http://www.greenvilledrive.com/

Our Lady of the Rosary is another private school but it only goes through 8th grade (I think) .

    http://olrgreenville.net/

Wow, dressage! Thank you so very, very much for typing all of that info up for me. You have no idea how appreciative I am. That is exactly the info I needed. Greenville does sound like the best option for my family. I%26#39;m really looking forward to our visit, and now with the information you%26#39;ve provided, I feel like I will know what I should be looking at, rather than just wandering the city aimlessly. A million thanks for all your help!

LOL sorry again about the length and I’m glad it helped. I was taking it easy last night and typed it up during commercials while watching TV. This was a very general posting on the area.

One thing I dislike about this site is I cant edit- but that’s ok. Should have done a little more editing before posting. But yeah… I’m off subject…

    For research purposes:

C Dan Joyner (the website is the name no spaces) might be a good starting place for you.

Honestly I don’t know a lot of realtors in the area but I pass one of their offices daily , plus their website is easy to navigate (the reason why I recommend it).

I believe they list houses by subdivision so you can get an idea of the houses in the neighborhoods. If you are going the private school route I would assume you would be less restricted on location- just how willing are you to drive everyday.

    Others to note:

Cheryl Teague (her name no spaces.net) has another website for REMAX just another random person I happened to hear in passing

Weichert Realtors (Google the name with the location like Greenville SC and you will get some websites)

The Greenville News has a homes section on Sunday and Friday (I think).

Ohh... we just got a new water park if you have young ones http://www.gcrd.org/ It%26#39;s not Carowinds or anything but it%26#39;s pretty cool nonetheless.

If you are looking for a hotel and need some help let me know :)

Hope you like the area :)

No apologies necessary. Every bit of info has proved to very useful. I checked out the real estate sites you mentioned and I%26#39;ve found them very useful in getting an idea of prices.

As far as a hotel goes, I think we%26#39;ll probably just stay at the Westin downtown when we visit because with our Starwood points we can stay for free. It got decent reviews on here. So I imagine it will work for a weekend scouting trip.

Again, thanks so much for your help dressage! I%26#39;m seriously looking forward to our visit. I%26#39;ve liked everything I%26#39;ve seen about Greenville. I%26#39;d say there%26#39;s a strong possibility we%26#39;ll be living there next year, but I%26#39;ll know with more certainty after we visit in person. You%26#39;ve been incredibly helpful. I can%26#39;t thank you enough!

Dressage hit the nail right on the head. I agree. I live in williamston, a small town right between anderson and greenville. Greenville does have more going on. and anderson does have more of a small town feel. Plenty of people live in anderson and work in greenville.

Greenville hospital is more of a teaching hospital than anderson.

Anderson is growing but in greenville something is going on all of the time with festivals and the theatre and the sports if you are into that.

My pleasure ksutie76. I hope you like the area and if not that%26#39;s ok too :) Definitely try to hit a couple different areas… they can vary a lot. There are lots of little towns outside of Greenville too. I think there should be something you like. Greenville isn’t small but it%26#39;s not Atlanta either (but hey you live close by).

The Westin Poinsett is a good location and since you are using points it should work out fine. Easy walk to everything downtown. Plus it%26#39;s easy to hit 385 to 85 for traveling by car. Or to Highway 123 to get to Easley.

I%26#39;ve heard fairly good reviews about staying at the Poinsett. It%26#39;s a some what newly restored historical landmark in Greenville- so it has a smaller lobby and rooms (from what I hear) than a modern hotel and- I think that is what throws people. Personally, I think they did a wonderful job on the restoration and restoring it to its former beauty. Soooo glad they saved it.

    Happy neighborhood shopping!!

    One other thing....

I%26#39;m sure you have a list of neighbrohoods to see in G%26#39;ville. However with that said I wanted to mention a few that might be worth visiting and/or researching. These are well established ones.

    Near Downtown:

The homes off of McDaniel Ave

Area around Greenville Country Club (located off of Augusta Road going away from Downtown)

Chanticleer is an unmarked neighborhood (meaning no sign) directly across from the GHS and off of West Faris Rd- look for Michaux Drive. Very close to downtown.

    Others Picks in Greenville

    Spaulding Farms

    Thornblade

    Sugar Creek or Sugar Mills

    Riverwalk

Any of The Cliffs communities (outside of Greenville area towards mountians)

    Holly Tree

    Holly Trace

    Less established

    Montebello

    Stonehaven

Just to name a few.... lots more too many to add :)

Dressage, Thanks so much for the list of neighborhoods. I%26#39;ll definitely come back on after our visit %26amp; share my thoughts/reviews. I have a really positive feeling about Greenville.

    Take care!

HH with a 2 Year Old

DH and I lived in Savannah several years ago, so we%26#39;re familiar with the area and have made a couple of day trips to HH. We would like to visit this spring (April?) with DD (age 2) and stay on the island.

I have no idea where to stay. We%26#39;d like something (condo, villa, suite, etc.) with two rooms. DD would enjoy a pool. We%26#39;d like a kid-friendly area, but nothing too loud. Disney%26#39;s resort sounds cool, but we%26#39;re not VC members and don%26#39;t know anyone who is.

We don%26#39;t vacation every year, so we tend to splurge a little. Nice amenities are more important than saving a buck. We%26#39;d like to take a day trip to Savannah to visit the old stomping grounds and may consider also visiting Charleston for a day. Other than that, we%26#39;d hang out in the pool, beach, etc.

    Thanks for your help!

Search the TUG Users group web site for timeshare rentals the week you are interested in (I don%26#39;t know the URL off hand...just google it). Any of the Marriott%26#39;s are very nice and will have all the amenities you need :-)

    Good Luck.

HH with a 2 Year Old

The Marriott Timeshares and Disney do have childrens programs, but so do the Westin, Hilton hotels.

You can rent a condo using www.cyberrentals or VRBO.com, or use a rental company. I recommend the Vacation Company or Island Getaway services. Both are well run and do not charge the outrageous prices that Resort Quest or the Sea Pines company charge.

We have a local company called ';Baby Away'; who will also deliver a tub of toys for your DD to paly with while visiting us.

  • Never been--love to shop--where to stay

Hello---I want to visit Charleston next fall, late October or mid-November. I love to shop and want to stay in the ';markets'; area---any suggestions? How cold will it be? Thanks!

Never been--love to shop--where to stay

There are a number of locations in the Market area. We stayed at the French Quarter Inn in November and it was great.

Shopping on King Street, the Market and the surrounding area is just a few steps away and the restaurants within walking distance are simply wonderful.

After dinner entertainment is close by as well.

It was light jacket weather when we were there which made the wandering around this beautiful city very comfortable.

    Love Charleston,

Visited in March 03 and Sept 04. Stayed in the St Charles Inn Hotel on meeting St. could walk to shopping and restauants from there (king st. just around corner). Hotel was pretty good for price we paid (thou is was 2 1/2 years ago so cant say what it is like now).

For dining try 82 Queen (Queen St). Fab food and service, not cheap for not over epensive (see their website). Would definately eat their again. Hymans is good for seafood - not gourmet, but nice and very good prices and very popular.

    Please help........................

Let me start out by saying that I am trying to help out a friend. They went to MB last year for the first time and really enjoyed their trip. She seems to recall seeing a second row hotel that had a fenced in ';waterpark'; type of outdoor swimming area that was painted wth very bright colors, I believe orange and Blue is what she said, but now she is unable to remember the name of it.

She thought it was called the Seamist, but after checking out the internet, she said that was not the name. Can anyone help out with this question? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Please help........................

It sounds exactly like Sea Mist, the resort is painted the orange and blue, on South Ocean Blvd. It is one of the older resorts on that end of the Blvd. The water park is across the street from the ocean.

    Please help........................

It sounds like Sra Mist to me also.

That is Sea Mist. Very Orange and Blue.

But I have heard bad reviews about the hotel itself. There are other hotels that have nice pool attraction for the kids that would be better than Sea Mist.

MrsMaryland, do you know exactly why the Seamist has gotten bad reviews? Is there some sort of link to reviews where she could check out the reviews? Does anybody know if the Seamist has it%26#39;s own website? Any further help would be wonderful! Thanks!!!

Do a google search for Sea Mist Resort, Myrtle Beach SC. The reviews do sound pretty bad, but they seem to indicate that the place was undergoing a renovation.

And, if your friend was looking for Seamist, that%26#39;s why she couldn%26#39;t find it. It%26#39;s two words. Sea Mist.

have stayed at the sea mist 4 or 5 times and never had any problems...staff was always friendly and the rooms although not 5 star can be comfy for anyone.

    Sea Island Inn

Is there any close restaurants close to the Sea Island Inn? Are there any oceanfront with views? Any place close to have a drink during the evening? How close is it to Boardwalk at the Beach? Is Sea Island a good choice for a first time visitor to MB?

    Sea Island Inn

I forgot to ask. Are there any miniture golfs close to Sea Island Inn? Any other type of entertainment within walking distance?

    Sea Island Inn

Sea Island is a very good choice and it does have its own restaurant with ocean views. Also with ocean views is The Sea Captains House about 4 miles to the south.

Restaurants within 3 miles or less are Carolina Roadhouse,Villa Mare,Cheeseburger in Paradise,Bonefish Grille and Fiesta Mexicana($2 lime margarita).

Also about 7 miles north is Hamburger Joes.Great burgers and cheap drinks with a back porch view of a salt marsh. Its right across from Barefoot Landing. In Barefoot is a Jackalope Steakhouse.

Broadway At The Beach is about 5 miles from Sea Island and my favorite restaurant there is Landry%26#39;s.

Theres a cluster of hotels less than a mile to the north and most of them have bars where you can get a drink at night or go right up on to 17 and there are more choices.

There%26#39;s mini golf on 17 with 3 or 4 between 48th and 21st. heading south.Dragons Lair has 2 courses at Broadway At The Beach.

I believe Sea Island is a great choice because of its location

which is in the middle of the major attractions. There are no high-rise hotels next to it so the views should be very good and all rooms are still new and should be in good shape.

There is really no entertainment within walking distance.

Locals? Tips on moving to Beaufort area

    Greetings all,

My husband and I are considering buying a home in the Beaufort area and will be visiting in January/February.

Do any of you locals have information on areas to look at, or avoid. What do you enjoy most about living in the Beaufort area?

We want to be on the ICW or a deep water creek, but not the ocean.

The other question, and this will seem like an odd one to those who don%26#39;t live in rural Georgia. Can I get a glass of wine with my restaurant meals on Sunday, or can I purchase wine on Sundays.

    Thanks in advance

Locals? Tips on moving to Beaufort area

I%26#39;m not a local (live in California), but have recently purchased a house on Lady%26#39;s Island. This was just two weeks ago, so I am still in the contract phase. At this point the house will be an income property for me, but I could easily see myself living in Beaufort someday. I had a very good realtor who seemed genuinely very happy about her own move there from Atlanta a couple of years ago. Her attitude about the area was infectious.

I%26#39;ve looked in a lot of areas on the southeast coast and liked Beaufort best for these reasons:

    1. hassle-free small town feel.

    2. beautiful historic town.

    3. proximity to Savannah, Charleston, and Hilton Head without having to live in any of these too-busy places.

    4. enough good local restaurants, with more on the way.

    5. enough local shopping.

    6. some room left for property appreciation due to relatively low inventory and prices.

    7. last but not least: nicer people than I have found anywhere else on the southeast coast.

I hope this helps you a little. I%26#39;m sure you will also be getting input from some locals.

    Tom

Locals? Tips on moving to Beaufort area

Tom, This is very helpful. We are looking very seriously at Lady%26#39;s Island also since it is so close to Beaufort and we can get a waterfronting place at a reasonable price.

There don%26#39;t seem to be that many vacation rentals on Lady%26#39;s Island but I think it%26#39;s a good location for that. It seems to cater to the non ocean-fronting crowd.

    Thanks for for the info.

I live in rural northern beaufort county on the water and development is approaching from southern beaufort and northern Jasper. In the pocotaligo area they announced up to 5000 homes and a million sf of commercial. The Settings at Mckay Point is one. They will both have waterfront. If you are going to live on the water ICW prices are generally higher, look for a high bluff lot to avoid flood insurance, try not to move where there is a homeowners assoc, if you like rural areas try Bennetts Point in colleton county(closer to Charleston), or Bull Point in Sheldon(houses are about 800k-1M), if you live on an out island like ladys or st. helena you are going to have to evacuate at some point and I can assure you there will be heavy traffic with all the developed islands, In 1994 I could have bought the house next to me for 189k, 2200sf, 2acres, deep water and a barn. It sold recently for 850K(still a good deal). instead, I bought a two acre lot next to it for 30k, now its 300k-500k. So, if you like people then move to one of the smaller islands, but if you like country then look north. Oh, all of the coastal counties can serve alcohol in restaurants. good luck.

Tullifinney, This is EXCELLENT information. We actually prefer having some space in between us and the neighbors, we%26#39;re not ';high density'; people.

It%26#39;s good to know about the evacuation problems, and you%26#39;re right, it will only get worse.

I really appreciate your taking the time to post.

I am planning a family vacation and noticed a lot of good reviews for Windy Hill Dunes. I was just wondering who do I contact to rent one of these condos?

    Best Western Grand Strand

I keep reading mixed reviews about this hotel. We are looking for a clean motel to rest in the evenings after the guys have been golfing all day, and we girls have been shopping all day. Is this location within walking distance for shopping and sightseeing? Any personal recommendations for accomodations? We haven%26#39;t made any reservations yet, and are planning our visit in the beginning of March.

    Best Western Grand Strand

South Ocean Blvd is not really a ';walking'; distance location for shopping except Beach Stores. I mentioned on another strand, check out the Dayton House, its on preferable North Ocean Blvd. They have ocean front and across the street from ocean rooms. Locally owned, an older hotel, but very clean and well kept. If you want shopping you will have to drive, Broadway at the Beach is approxmiately a mile from Dayton House, you also have Coastal Grand Mall, largest mall in South Carolina. 2 Outlet Malls, if you want decent shopping, you will have to drive.

  • Eastport Golf Course

I%26#39;ve heard that Eastport has been sold to a development company. Is it still operating as a golf course? If so, have they announced a closing date?

Has anyone played there recently? I was wondering if was in OK shape, or if they just let it go at this point....

    Eastport Golf Course

Live across from Eastport, noticed the lettering for Eastport Golf Course was removed from the sign, and did not see anyone playing Sat and it was a beautiful day for golf.

    Wow!

Thanks for the follow up on Eastport..

I remember watching this course being built in the late 1980%26#39;s. Although it was never acknowledged as an upper end course, I always enjoyed playing there. Lots of great memories!

    RIP EASTPORT

Is this week okay to visit MB?

I wanted to visit MB with my family may 21st-25th, but some helpful posters stated it could run in between the 2 bike weeks. I thought this was the week in the middle of the 2 bike weeks, will this be okay. I understand they start to come down on wed for the atlantic bike week, honestly am I gonna be in trouble if I go down this week? I plan on leaving fri morn to come home, Plan on staying at dunes village, any imput woul be helpful.Thanks.

RIP Darrent Williams #27. WE LOVE OUR BRONCOS!

Is this week okay to visit MB?

    Bronco:

You will be staying in one of the most peaceful areas regarding the effects of the biker%26#39;s coming and going. Dunes Village is not in one of the preferred lodging areas for the bikers, who tend to gravitate to areas where large groups of accomodations are more available....

Is this week okay to visit MB?

Well, I understand everyone has an opinion and all of this is subjective. I LIVE HERE, I experience BOTH bike weeks. I would under NO circumstances come anywhere near MB on Memorial Day weekend. I don%26#39;t care where you are staying, unless you plan to NEVER leave the resort, you will be in a big mess. That particular bike week, trust me, from Wednesday May 23rd, you will find alot of traffic and on the weekend TERRIBLE TRAFFIC. You have young children, I am not sure you want them to see what they might see regarding apparel, or lack of it, that can be true of both weeks. You will obviously get several opinions. It is not a family oriented time to be at the beach. I understand the person from ';Jersey'; believes you will be immune to it, NO, only if you stay at your resort. Once you hit business 17, it is fair game. The bike activities stretch from Ocean Blvd north to Atlantic Beach. See, we enjoy the circus like atmosphere, because, we are people watchers and you can%26#39;t pay money to see this type of entertainment. But our kids are grown, I still would not want them around this. I mentioned Myrtlebeachonline.com, go to the forum section and read the biker forums. Those of us who live here, wish both bike weeks would go away, but if we can only chose one, Memorial Day bike week has ruined MB during that time. BRONCO, if you provide your email address I will be happy to talk with you. I prefer not to give mine since I am telling you not to come I assume I will create ';bad will'; amongst other people who think they know what bike week is like, WHO don%26#39;t live here.

I did forget to reply to the between 2 bike weeks. Yes Atlantic Bike week does not officially begin until Thursday, they start rolling enmass on Wednesday, some on Tuesday, so technically you will be here for the beginning of it. Now you will FOR SURE MISS THE BIGGEST DAYS leaving on Friday, but Thursday and Friday morning you will still have alot of traffic, granted on Friday it will be all incoming. You will see alot of people in on Wednesday, we noticed a big jump in traffic on Wednesday. Most of the Harley riders will be gone, a few come the last weekend of Harley week and stay on into next week, that isn%26#39;t really an issue, if there was not another bike week I would say come on, no problems. You will not be in the worst of it, but you will not avoid some of it. I am dead serious when I mention the sights and things you will see are not always family friendly. If you do decide to come I strongly suggest you head to North MB and to not even attempt to go into MB proper. The Atlantic Beach portion doesn%26#39;t start until Friday morning I believe, that is in North MB. If you are driving you will make better time on I-22 and I-31 to Grisham Parkway. Do NOT attempt to take 501 thru Conway into MB, although no one should ever take 501 into MB now that 22 and 31 are finished. Even going to South Strand you will make better time.

I%26#39;ve been in North Myrtle Beach the last 3 years during the Atlantic Beach bike week. I see no bikers on the beach in the Crescent Beach section, I see none on the golf courses I go to and they%26#39;re not around the restaurants I eat. Other than seeing them on highway 17 with the rest of the traffic, I would not know there is a bike week. It%26#39;s always been a great time to visit.

Bronco was planning on staying in MB at Dunes Village, NOT Crescent Beach. If she wants to come, fine, I JUST LIVE HERE, what do I know. I am sure you will NOT see any bikers on the golf course. Come on down Bronco and then please comment when you retur, I will be very curious to see how you liked it. I am not saying another word about it, people who live somewhere else always know more than local people.

Well....I live here too, and not too far from Dunes Village. I agree that this area, tho%26#39; not totally immune to the effects of both bike weeks...we probably hear more noise and have a bit more traffic with the Harley riders than with Atlantic Beach Fest riders....most of the local atrractions during the time of your trip are of no interest on the most part to the bikers...most are here strictly to cruise around the beach area....mostly in the MB downtown area (which I agree with MagicKat...is pretty crazy, and the later in the evening, even crazier!) To be honest...I have the attitude ';if you cant beat %26#39;em...'; so we%26#39;ll head down to Kirk%26#39;s Ice Cream (not too far from Dunes Village...and some great homemade ice cream!) Grab a large cone...and sit outside on the park benches and watch the bikes go by....the KFC across the street from Kirk%26#39;s always has alot of action...and IMO is still ';family friendly';.

As for staying in NMB...the problem being with that is if you want to do anything in MB you have to travel thru the heart of the festival which is held in Atlantic Beach....and the traffic can be a nightmare! Traffic chutes, police patrols, angry people....just not a good situation...

And...looking at your dates --- I think you will be absolutely fine! Probably the best week of May to come down. Harely week ends on the 20th (of course we DO have local folks with Harleys) and Atlantic Beach Fest begins on May 24th (and we do have local folks who happen to be younger and ride the sport bikes)....Have a great time....enjoy, and dont worry!

    :)

There is an impact regardless where you stay. We have been in the Cherry Grove section the last few years during the %26#39;biker period%26#39; and you can see and certainly hear the bikes going up and down the streets. Traffic is worse, but not too bad in that area. We have 2 very young children and don%26#39;t hesitate to bring them down during that time (they actually enjoy sitting on balcony and watching the bikers cruising, and waving to them). Beaches are actually less crowded than normal because bikers don%26#39;t typically spend much time on the beach. I cannot comment on Myrtle, just the northern part of North Myrtle. Another thing, bikers are generally friendly. We don%26#39;t venture out to restaurants, shopping much, so don%26#39;t encounter that experience. We don%26#39;t live in the area but are there many times each year, and always during biker week(s). It will be more crowded, traffic worse, and very noisy, but as long as you are OK w/ that, enjoy!

I understand all of this is dependent on your view of things, and yes Bronco lover is leaving on Friday, but what about the other people reading it who might want to come that weekend. I live here I find that Wednesday thru Monday afternoon to be the most miserable time to be in Myrtle Beach. You have people wanting to come to the beach, and MB is certainly pushing tourism, sure bring your children, and they are being told nothing wrong with it, except a little traffic. I am really shocked. I would not invited my worst enemies to the beach that week. Yes, North Myrtle Beach will have less ';biker'; issues, but am I the only one who saw how ';idiotic'; these people act. Popping wheelies, riding between moving vehicles on Business 17, racing in and out of cars on Bypass 17, Am I the only one that happened to! Also, am I the only one they jumped out in front of and stopped my car on Ocean Blvd in front of Gilligans! I know my husband and I aren%26#39;t the only ones to watch them use the facilites on the side of the road, as well as flash us their private parts. To invite people here during that week, is absurd.

if you love the broncos let me put it this way about the week in question. it would be like a bronco fan going to a raiders game in la. with bronco stuff on. no pretty.

    ';I am not saying another word about it, people who live somewhere else always know more than local people. ';

Guess the cat couldn%26#39;t hold their tongue.......LOL

    Seascape Villas

Hi there... I%26#39;m looking for any/all kinds of information on HHI.

My husband, our 5 year old daughter and my in-laws are going for a week over Labor Day and staying in the Seascape Villas.

I%26#39;ve never been there and have tons of questions.... is the area a nice area? is anyone familiar with these villas? are there things to do? anything a 5 year old couldnt/shouldnt miss? Any must not miss places to see?

    thanks!

    Seascape Villas

There is usually a music presentation at Harbourtown that is kid oriented. You will need to pay a small entry fee to get into the Planation, but the harbor with the fancy boats is worth a stop. You will recognize the striped lighthouse.

    Seascape Villas

We love HH and have been going for 14 years. When our kids were little we did the dolphin watch/crabbing trip out of Shelter Cove- lots of fun. Rent bikes- its an awesome island for that- very flat. The nature preserve is also very nice. We went to Savannah also- beautiful!!

Have fun!! Go to Wild Wings for great Wings!

Hi. My husband and our 4-year old son just returned from our vacation at Hilton Head and we stayed at Seascape Villas. The location was great for us, on S. Forest Beach near Sea Pines within walking distance of Coligny Circle which is considered downtown Hilton Head. Seascape is just across the street (S. Forest Beach Drive) from the beach which is accessible via a nice shaded walking path, maybe a 3 minute walk. Seascape appears to have been built in the 80s, and as for the villa itself, the one we stayed in (#3014) was badly in need of remodeling. However it did appear that others units in the complex had been remodeled and were much nicer inside. Ours was a 2 bedroom, 2 bath - very small bathrooms (with no electrical plugs in them) and the kitchen was also quite small, however fine for just the 3 of us for a weeklong stay. It appears there are also larger units (3 or 4 bedroom), which I would assume have larger common areas. The grounds of the complex are nice, heavily shaded with trees, including the pool area (there are 2 pools). There are several ponds (with turtles to feed) and also a small playground. My suggestion for things to do? If you enjoy being outside, rent bikes and explore the island%26#39;s many bike paths! We have vacationed here twice and really enjoyed biking the island. There are bike paths galore and it is very peaceful riding the shaded trails. I suggest renting bikes from Pedals. We have rented from them and from Coconuts-would not recommend Coconuts. Seascape is very close to Coligny Circle and we biked there one afternoon, enjoyed some frozen daquiris at the Frosty Frog Cafe (they have non-alcoholic for the kids) and then took in a movie at the one-screen theatre there. Lots of neat little shops for browsing too. Visit Harbour Town at Sea Pines - go to the top of the lighthouse for excellent panoramic views of the island. We enjoyed meals at Giuseppi%26#39;s (pizza) and Hudson%26#39;s (seafood). I have heard a great thing to do for kids is the Bubblegum Cruise (out of Harbour Town) however we did not make it as it was raining the morning of the cruise and we opted not to go in the rain. For our 4 year old, the biking (he sat in a child seat on my husband%26#39;s bike), the beach and the pool were enough entertainment. They also have several miniature golf places on the island, which we intended to do but ran out of time. Hope you enjoy your visit to HH, we have been 4 times and love it there!

iloveuf... thanks so much for your post. that was exactly what i wanted to know.

ive never been to HHI, but my husband and his parents have been there numerous times (not at Seascape tho). I cant remember exactly which Villa we%26#39;re staying in (I have the information, but its in my car where I cant access it). Id recognize it if I saw the pictures, but cant seem to find it online. all I remember is it is a ';fish theme'; and 2 bedroom villa. So, its probably very similar to yours.

My daughter is extremely excited about this trip and I plan on taking her on teh bubblegum cruise (weather permitting). She will absolutely LOVE that. this is her first real vacation and she%26#39;s soo excited, I just want to make sure she has a ball. She%26#39;ll be excited when I tell her there are turtles she can feed.

also, thanks for the suggestions on things to do/where to eat... I%26#39;m sure that information will come in very handy!!

    Hi there...

Born and raised in HHI...you will have a great time!

Things my 5 year old daughter loves...

    1. Captain Zodiac Dolphin boats. Out of Sea Pines in the South Beach area. These boats will get you at eye level with the dolphins.

    2. Shell hunting. Once again in Sea Pines at South Beach...park at the Salty Dog walk to your right on the cart path and cross over the street when you see the open ocean park area. Walk to the right on the beach as far as you can go (500 yards). Go about 1 hour before low tide and it is an ocean wonderland.

    3. Bike rides...she loves to alligator hunt in the Sea Pines Forest Perserve.

4.. Gregg Russell concert in Sea Pines (harbor town) Sunday to Friday at 8:00. Check seapines.com or greggrussell.com to make sure he is still performing on Labor Day weekend.

    5. She is not a fan of the bubble gum cruise...hard to see the dophins and she can get Gregg Russell for free at the concerts.

    6. Salty Dog at night for an ice cream and to listen to the music. This is great for everyone.

Places to eat...Truffles in Sea Pines, Aunt Chiladas near where you are staying and Sticky Fingers for ribs. They are all family places. You can get into some long waits at restaurants during labor day so if you decide on Wild Wings you might want to pick up your dinner and eat at home or on the beach.

It might be easier on everyone to drive into Sea Pines and rent bikes there. There are rentals at the Plantaion Golf Course (central Sea Pines), Sea Pines Center (close to Harbour Town) or South Beach near the Salty Dog Cafe. This would save you a long ride with a five year old if you wanted to tour around Sea Pines or hit the forest perserve.

Don%26#39;t let the $5.00 to get into Sea Pines throw you off...you will have lots of fun.

I also should have stated that you might want to put some vinegar or meat tenderizer in your beach bag. If there was a jelly fish sting with your daughter it takes the sting out.

thanks for the info vegas! Here%26#39;s a couple follow up questions tho...

    1) I found a website for Captain zodiac Dolphin boats and, to be honest, this makes more sense for the reasons you stated. She can get closer to the dolphins, but mostly because if she can see Greg Russell for free, why pay the extra money. My question is.. one thing I cant seem to find is a price. Do you, by chance, remember how much it cost for the Zodiac Dolphin tour?

    2) thanks for the in depth information on shell hunting. Especially the times and locations. You hit the nail on the head on that one... she LOVES seashells. I printed off your post so I can take that with me and I%26#39;ve already printed off the times of high/low tide for the week we%26#39;re there.

    3) I%26#39;m staying at Seascape Villas... (btw iloveuf.... I found the villa. We%26#39;re at #3078 www.hiltonheadislandcondo.com/3078.html ) .... are they in ';Sea Pines';? I didnt think we were that close to South Beach.... how far am I from ';Harbor Town';?

    and... as a p.s.

Vegas... THANK YOU for the heads up on vinegar. With my luck, she%26#39;ll get stung. And she is not a fan of pain. I took her to the dentist for the first time last week and you would have thought he was killing her. Again, my ';would have been'; migraine thanks you!

    Hi...

Seascape is not in Sea Pines but you a very close.

There are two ways to get into Sea Pines from Seascape...I recommend going in the ';Ocean Gate'; of Sea Pines as there is much less traffic. From Seascape head south on Forest Beach go all the way to the end where the road vears to the right and you will see the gate. Go slow and there are signs everywhere giving you directions once in Sea Pines. There is even a map on the back of the pass they give you when you pay $5.00 to get in.

Harbour Town and South Beach should take no more than 15 minutes to get to from Seascape.

Captain Zodiac is very fun. I do not remember how much we paid but I know it was not a budget breaker. Having spent my youth on the island as well as 3 months a year there for the past 10 years I am not big on paying alot for these type of things. I am going to guess $20.00 per person. There is an extended tour that you can do which stops on Daufauskie Island. I do not think this is worth it. I prefer just the regular 1 hour tour.

I am a huge fan of Gregg Russell but the boat he uses (Vagabond) is huge, slow and hot.

Let me know if there is anything else I can do for you.

I should have also told you about Shannon Tanner. (Shannontanner.com) He is a Gregg Russell knock-off...sings songs with the kids in Shelter Cove across the street from Palmetto Dunes.

This is fun when they have the fireworks show. In the summer the fireworks are on Tuesdays but I am not too sure what goes on in September. When you get to HHI grab an ';Island Events'; magazine and see if they are doing the fireworks.

This is a fun family night...crowded but fun. There are lots of things for the kids to do and see...make a necklace, get face painted or hair braided.

There is a mexican restaurant in Shelter Cove called San Miguels which has been and island staple for many years. They have a nice outdoor bar as well.
