Windcrest Villas or Windy Shores II ???

Have stayed in Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach and love NMB. We have previously stayed at the MeanC but we do not need such a large house/Condo this time. We are looking for a small condo with pool and all the other ammenities W/D etc. Anyone have any suggestions or has anyone stayed at either place?

Thanks!!!

Windcrest Villas or Windy Shores II ???

Both of these are in the Windy Hill section (southern part of NMB). Both buildings are somewhat %26#39;dated%26#39; inside and out. There are many units for rent in each building, so take a close look at pictures on web sites (Elliott) to get the most updated one. If all you are looking for is a view and a pool, these will be fine. I personally prefer the Cherry Grove section of NMB, but this area is nice also.

Windcrest Villas or Windy Shores II ???

my parents own a condo at windcrest villas. we lease through elliot realty. we%26#39;re in the process of upgrading our condo. (put in new carpet, replacing mattresses, etc) several owners are very involved in improving the building and facilities. i agree with the other poster about looking at the pictures of the different apartments.

Hotel/B&B friendly for mom and 8-month old?

My husband, 8-month old baby and I will be traveling to Charleston in mid- November. We are looking for a quiet, friendly, clean hotel/B%26amp;B in the historic/downtown section, since husband will be attending conference and baby and I will explore, sightsee and nap. Any ideas or recommendations?

Hotel/B%26amp;B friendly for mom and 8-month old?

OK, I will apologize ahead of time for being the bad guy, but I would never take an infant to a B%26amp;B.

There will be others there for the quiet you are seeking, and there is to much of a chance of ruining it for the others with an infant that could act up at any time.

I think it would be a prime time for a quiet getaway for you and hubby...and a family sitter for the child.

Please don%26#39;t hate me :)...JMHO.

Hotel/B%26amp;B friendly for mom and 8-month old?

In reply to tomjadg%26#39;s message:

Not everyone with children has a choice to leave them with family. I will be traveling to Charleston in early Nov with my 3 1/2 year old. I do not have family that will watch her, my parents are in their 80%26#39;s and my husband%26#39;s family are in Scotland.

But regarding hotels we are going to stay at the Holiday Inn historic district because of the review it got and I thought it would be more child friendly.

Godlight:

HI Historic District is exactly what I was ready to suggest when I read your last post.

You made a very good choice. I recently visited a friend staying there - it%26#39;s a great place. You and your family will enjoy it. Easy and safe to venture out and about while your husband attends his conference.

The hotel is just a block or so over from the the Visitors Center. Walk over and grab some info, take back to hotel to plan your perfect Charleston visit as your baby naps. There%26#39;s plenty to see and do close by. Great little restaurants for lunch and dinner include Coast (just behind Rue De Jean- which, by the way, has the best mussels ever) and Baisl.

You are staying in a great location -and you%26#39;re going to have a great time. My one suggestion: I%26#39;m not a parent of an infant, but I do know the streets are rough (romantic cobblestone and all) and sometimes difficult to negotiate a stroller. If you don%26#39;t have one already, you might want to consider investing in a Snugli pack just in case.

Have fun and please report back to let us know how it goes.

weather

I will be visiting Oct. 11. I%26#39;m wondering what to wear. Is it hot, warm, cool. I%26#39;m in Michigan so it%26#39;s cool here.

Thanks

check your fav weather info website the day before you leave - the only way to know. weather anywhere is so fluid, you can check for the averages - the historical temps are accurate - but for the future check right before you pack. what is cold to some is warm to others. this time of year layers may be best for you - can add or delete as you want. I like it HOT, so 65 is cold to me!!

weather

igetit, we just got back from Charleston on the 4th, staying at IOP. The week we were there was absolutely glorious. It was about 80 at the ocean each day with very few clouds, and in the low 60’s in the evening. No humidity at all. Perfect for keeping the sliding doors open all day, especially at night-love that ocean sound at night! The ocean was warm, also.

Bridegan 1 is right about www.weather.com. Check out their 10 day forecast, it proved to be pretty accurate for the time we were there.

Go Bucks!

Local forcast says temp is dropping this week. Calling for high of 82 tomorrow (Oct. 10), but expected to drop to 60%26#39;s by end of week, low in the evenings in the 40%26#39;s. Perfect for oyster season.

I find weather.com to be fairly accurate in predicting for this area.

  • Charleston Restaurant Days of Operation

I must say that this forum is EXTREMELY helpful. My wife and I will be in Charleston the day after Thanksgiving and are sooo looking forward to the trip. My question is what days are the restaurants open for business? Are most of the restaurants open on Sunday and Monday? We will be there from 11/24 and depart on 11/28, and have plans with another couple.....which leave only Sunday and Monday nights for ourselves.

Thanks a million for your help....

    Southerner in Cajun Country

    Charleston Restaurant Days of Operation

most are, if you have a particluar fav check the website, e-mail or call them directly.

3 of my favs, peninsula grill, mccrady%26#39;s %26amp; oak are open - another fav, Cru cafe is closed monday.

TGI-Fridays.... just how GOOD are they?

We will be going to the one at NMB. How good is there food? Are there any ';must try'; foods there?

Also, we went to their website and it let you sign up for printable coupons. There are 8 of us going, and my husband, myself and my 3 kids are gonna be on one ticket, my brother in law on his own ticket, and the other couple on their own ticket, will they let us use 3 different coupons? The coupon says a free appetizer for a 15 dollar purchase per party.... that%26#39;s the tricky part, if we were all seated at 3 different tables, that would be three parties, we are all on 3 different tickets b/c we%26#39;re paying separately, so do they still consider us ONE PARTY?!?!

We%26#39;re hoping to each use a coupon.... does anyone know if they will let us do this???

Well, it%26#39;s really COUNTDOWN time for us! We pack tonight, go shopping tomorrow evening after work for non-perishible grocery items, and leave Tuesday night at 11:00 pm, should get there about 8:30-9:00 Wednesday morning.....

If anyone has any last minute tips for us, we%26#39;d appreciate them!

Thansk to all for your help and input on our endeavor for the ';perfect fall vacation';!

    Tammy

TGI-Fridays.... just how GOOD are they?

Haven%26#39;t been to MB TGI-FRidays. Been to others in couple different states and towns. Pretty much ';seen one, seen em all'; type operation.

Very similar to Applebee%26#39;s or Ruby Tuesdays if you%26#39;ve ever ate at one of those. Sports bar / pub type atmosphere. Family oriented.

Food is ok. Can%26#39;t think of anything ';must ';have.'; Wide variety of items to chose from. Maybe 80% of it is fried or covered in cheese.

Only major negative I can think of is slow service. I don%26#39;t think it%26#39;s a matter of poor service at any one location. Get feeling they pace the meal so the longer you%26#39;re there the more drinks and appetizers you buy.

Ask about the coupons when you ask to be seated. Eight at one table wouldn%26#39;t be a problem. Three bills at one table shouldn%26#39;t be a problem either. Being one party vs three to use a coupon would be up to them. Could go either way depending on who you ask.

TGI-Fridays.... just how GOOD are they?

yeah i totally agree with pop about the food. I went to the one in Myrtle Beach and it was exactly the same as the one in ohio. I think they have decent prices and i like there bugers but i dont care much for there steaks

Same here. Not crazy about the food. But if you have never been to one, then go. Nice variety of food, salads pretty good.

And I would think, that if you have 3 different tickets, that would be 3 parties. So print 3 coupons if you can.

I know you have talking about this trip all summer long! I can%26#39;t believe it is in just a couple of days! I bet you are so excited!

Heck - I%26#39;m excited for you!! Hope the weather is great and MB is everything you hoped it would be and more. But hey, the ocean is the ocean, no matter where or when you go. It is AWESOME!!!

    Enjoy!!

    Have a safe trip!!

I agree with the other two that posted. The food is pretty good. Nothing the lose no sleep over though. Just ry it and see what you think. Yeah they should let you use the coupons to.

cool, hopefully they will let us use all three coupons then! :)

Yeah Beachlady, I am REALLY excited! We leave tomorrow night at 11:00 pm!!! We done most all of our packing tonight, just gotta pack up the shampoo, toothbrushes, etc tomorrow before leaving!

I%26#39;ll post a review when we return!

    Hope the weather is ok.

The weather.com said earlier that wednesday and thursday was supposed to be nice, but a little rainy, and then friday and saturday is supposed to be in the 60%26#39;s and no rain.... so should still be nice, just a little chilly those days.

We should have a blast anyways!

    Thanks all for your input!

    God bless,

    Tammy

Friday%26#39;s is not that great. It%26#39;s a chain restaurant that caters to mainly the bar with their appetizers. I would always go there for their appetizers and just sit at the bar with friends on a Friday night which was always fun.

The prices are pretty decent and it%26#39;s a good place for families. It%26#39;s comparable to Ruby Tuesday%26#39;s or Applebees which to me aren%26#39;t that great. These places tend to be a bit boring after you have eaten there so many times.

Depending on the cook that night your food could taste like a frozen entree that hasn%26#39;t been heated long enough.

-If there are any must trys it would be their appetizers. Most of them are pretty good. I don%26#39;t know about these new ones they have (Fried Macaroni and Cheese, and Fried Green beans) but the others are good. The loaded potato skins, wings and spinach dip are probably my favorite.

  • Looking for a nice restaurant that allows children

I am going to Charleston on Nov 2nd with my 3 1/2 year old daughter. I would like to eat at a good restaurant in Charleston. I don%26#39;t want a typical kid chain restaurant but don%26#39;t want something so upscale that I would feel uncomfortable with my daughter. We would probablty eat around 5-6 pm.

Looking for a nice restaurant that allows children

if your child is well-behaved why would you feel uncomfortable? I bring my grandchildren anywhere i want as long as they are behaving appropriately. Bring her anywhere, and if she is having a bad night leave. The hardest thing for kids is the length of time they have to sit for a nice meal - try someplace where you can get up and walk outside for a few seconds between courses.

try Cru Cafe and Peninsula grill - cru much less fancy with fab food, peninsula more fancy - best value since price for food is a bargain, she will defintely need to on her ';sunday best'; here. Tristan also easy to walk outside.

The mac %26amp; cheese and brerad pudding at Cru are wonderful. Tristan burgers one of the best downtown and peninsula Grill can%26#39;t be beat

Looking for a nice restaurant that allows children

another thought - not upscale but with nice ';vibes'; maybe someplace outside or overlooking water?

Shem creek location of vickery%26#39;s - it%26#39;s been a while since I%26#39;ve been, nice location.

Folly beach - taco boy very casual, 11 center street - upstairs tapas bar. very relaxed

mondo%26#39;s on james island - decent italian

if you are in town on a saturday walk to the farmers market. also picnic lunches from cru vafe and eat in battery park - she can run around and enjoy the scenery and water.

    sullivan%26#39;s island

If you are staying Downtown, Fleet Landing is a restaurant that is right on the water at Waterfront Park and they are people friendly. The menu is very diverse from 4 course meals w/wine to Hamburgers and french fries for the little ones. There is even a great view of the Bridge. Reservations are not required but could be useful. Please enjoy yourself--

We have1 good shot at a seafood dinner while visiting, help!

    Hello,

My wife and I are traveling to Charleston for 2 day trips the first week of October. Since we really only have 1 good shot at a seafood dinner while visiting due to schedules, would you please give a recommendation? My desire is to have a great meal regardless of the environment. We%26#39;d really enjoy a moderately priced casual restaurant, and once again, the seafood is the key. Since we have transportation a restaurant in the environs of Charleston would also work. We鈥檙e looking forward to our visit since we鈥檒l be staying at Murrells Inlet and hope to find a few good breakfast and lunch spots driving between the two locations. If you have any suggestions for stops on our drive, please share them with us. I really want to try Jacks Sonic Dogs in Mt Pleasant. Is it worth the stop? So since I鈥檓 rambling, any suggestions that would help us more fully enjoy our anniversary celebration vacation are really appreciated.

    Many thanks for your help.

We have1 good shot at a seafood dinner while visiting, help!

First, I will admit that I have not eaten at many restaurants in Charleston so others may be better but I will put my 2 cents worth in and vote for Sullivan%26#39;s Restaurant on Sullivan%26#39;s Island. It is moderatley priced and some of the best seafood I have tasted anywhere and I grew up on the coast of North Carolina not far from Calabash.

It is about a 15 minute drive from downtown Charleston and well worth the trip. You can see their menu at their website: www.sullivansrestaurant.com

We have1 good shot at a seafood dinner while visiting, help!

Once you get past Georgetown there is nothing, so unless you want to wait until you get to Mount Pleasant, you should eat something between Murrell%26#39;s Inlet and Georgetown. You want to get gas too if you need it.

I recommend Hank%26#39;s Seafood in downtown Charleston.

I second the recommendation for Hanks Seafood in historic Charleston. The chef there trained at La Bernadin in New York, so preparation is expert. The seafood is fresh, local and delicious. Hanks is slightly more upscale than in some local beach places you might be envisioning; but it is not expensive. The service is friendly and prompt. Hanks is a great place to conclude a day%26#39;s visit to Charleston.

hank%26#39;s it is. whatever you hear or people try to tell you DO NOT EAT AT HYMANS SEAFOOD! IT IS NOTHING BUT A BIG FAT TOURIST TRAP. there is a good restaurant in awendaw which is between mcclenenville and mt pleasant it is called sewee restaurant try it for lunch.

    fb1, thanks for your input.

I don%26#39;t see why you have to put all caps on your apparent unhappiness with one of our restaurants. You can call it what you want, but that is only your opinion.

I%26#39;ve eaten at Hyman%26#39;s once, and it was fantastic.

So tell me, if a place (be it restaurant, store, or entire city) caters toward tourists, does that make it a bad place? Myrtle beach caters to tourists, but that doesn%26#39;t make it a bad place. Come to think of it, so does Folly Beach.

Your opinion is what it is. That doesn%26#39;t mean I or anyone on this board has to agree with it.

So give it a rest already.

floski glad you had a good meal at hymans. my advice was not based on a bad meal but actually knowing people who have worked there. they have all told me that most of the seafood is frozen when advertised as fresh, also they have a tendency to switch fish off if they run out ex. bass becomes flounder etc. i was not knocking tourist oriented establishments only trying to warn those that wouldn%26#39;t know any better. i have worked in the hospitality industry in charleston for 20 plus years and have nothing against tourists i would just like to see them get a real charleston experiance .

Many thanks to all for your help. If you ever need info on the Washington DC area drop me a line.

I look forward to visiting such a chaming city.

Hank%26#39;s is recommened for the seafood. And Jack%26#39;s Cosmic Dogs is worth the stop. Make sure to get some real, fresh cut french fries!

Absolutely stop at Jack%26#39;s Cosmic Dog!!! It is a happening. It will be on your left as you are on the very outskirts of Mt Pleasant from Murrils Inlet. Easy to miss, but worth turning around! All the menu item%26#39;s flavor are enhanced by one of their old-school bottled sodas.

I cannot believe noone mentioned The Wreck of the Richard and Charlene for seafood! Hands down the one place I pick over anything else in Charleston. Food served on paper plates, you sit on a porch on plastic outdoor chairs-your beer is in a can and the seafood surpasses all! Now, they may not serve fancy or complicated recipes-but when you want FRESH broiled or fried seafood...that is it. And leave your credit card at home-they accept cash only.

Hanks is good too, just a whole different atmosphere. I can honestly say I have eaten at most every restaurant in Charleston...and we basically find they fall into one of 3 categories: Good, better, outstanding. Sub-par eateries do not last for long in this town!

Happy Anniversary to the both of you-enjoy your time in Chalreston!

Charlestongirls, thanks soooooooooooooo much for the suggestion of The Wreck of the Richard and Charlene. I had rearranged our schedule to visit Charleston so that we can do 2 day trips rather than one since the drive back to Murrells inlet isn鈥檛 long and on the second day we鈥檙e headed to Savannah for the first Friday fireworks and Oktoberfest on the Riverwalk. When I read your description of The Wreck of the Richard and Charlene, my face found a big smile and my mind brought back really fond memories of a similar place in Williamsburg years ago. I looked it up at another sight a saw that it got 4 grease stains (this sent a shiver down my spine). I just flipped a coin between Sullivan%26#39;s Restaurant and Hank鈥檚 and Hank鈥檚 lost for our second dinner (your thoughts?). I鈥檝e eaten around the world and find that those Mom and Pop鈥檚 are just so darn good, especially if they serve generous portions ( I just looked at the Wreck site picture of their seafood platter and a shiver hit me again). Should I make the Sewee restaurant my second lunch stop coming from Murrells Inlet of do you have another great suggestion. A web site said it might be the best cooking in South Carolina. We may never make it back through again so any help you can give us鈥?

Thanks again Charlestongirls and everyone else who responded. Maybe one day we can return the favor or just pass it on. If you have suggestions for Savannah or our trip home on/around I95 north please share them.

It%26#39;s a beautiful Sunday and so much better now that I%26#39;ve read the post.

    South Beach Resort

Any comments or reviews of South Beach Resorts Time shair.

I just bought one and now i am not sure it i did the right thing.

    South Beach Resort

This is a really nice place at the south end , I had a look at it in August. Nice area . You should be happy there.

    South Beach Resort

Out of all of the time shares (or PVO --- preferred vacation ownership, as most are now called) in the area, I really have to say that South Beach is one of my favorite. I really like the location and the layout of the resort there....its not like they%26#39;ve tried to cram everything in a small area.....and with the parent company being Burroughs and Chapin, I dont think you could go wrong on that one.

Why are you feeling it may have been a bad choice? (if you dont mind me asking.....)

    :)

Are you more unsure about the property or the fact that you purchased a timeshare?

Idon%26#39;t think i made a bad choice. I like MB and i like the resort. It%26#39;s just when i got homeand went through the ton of paper work i was overwhelmed.

I think once i go through the prosses of booking a vacation i%26#39;ll feel better with what i%26#39;am doing.

    THANK :)

Ha! I know what you mean, but rest assured that when you go to use your PVO (and let them know its your 1st time) most of the reps are sweethearts!

    Christmas weather?

    Hi,

thinking about going to Folly Beach instead of the Gulf Coast panhandle - just trying to figure out how the weather compares in late December. We just loved being able to walk around barefoot and in t-shirts on the Gulf Coast on a few days of our stay in winter - is that kind of thing possible in Folly Beach at that time of year or is it miserably cold and windy?

Any other input on what Folly is like at this time of year also appreciated!

    Christmas weather?

Don%26#39;t be too sure you can walk around barefoot. Anything between temps in the 80s and sleet is possible. But I think there is a good chance for some very nice weather. Nevertheless, the panhandle may be the better choice. We%26#39;ve experienced quite a difference in temperatures between SC%26#39;s coast and the northern part of FL, Gulf or Atlantic coast.

    Christmas weather?

How crazy is that - I finally post to the forum, and a fellow German answers:-)

  • Greenville Restaurants

I wuill be visiting Greenville shortly and would like to eat at two or three of the best restaurants. Can you please give me suggestions as well as a brief description? I%26#39;m definitely looking for something on the nicer end of the spectrum, can be pretty expensive, but doesn%26#39;t have to be. I just want good and fairly upscale.

    Greenville Restaurants

    hi mcemmettc,

my husband and i visited Greenville this spring and a co worker suggested a restaurant called Sobys. It was very good....on the upscale yet comfortable side. I would say its one of the better restaurnts in the downtown area. Here is a link to their website:

  • Beach town?

Okay; I had one pretty bad experience in Charleston... Stayed at Seaside Inn on Isle of Palms (a horrible hotel), there was water standing literally an inch deep in the parking lot, it rained the entire time, the beach looked like pavement itself (flat, hard), and the city seemed ';blah'; (but maybe it was just my mood). Since it%26#39;s an hour shorter%26#39;s drive than to MB and time is limited, I%26#39;m thinking of giving it another try in mid- to late- September. Is there a better side to the beach than I saw? As for the town, I prefered Savannah, but am I missing something and selling it short? Let me hear your input...

    Beach town?

We love Folly Beach, just a short drive from downtown Charleston. We have rented 5 different beach houses (from Island Realty and Fred Holland), and each one had its own appeal. Check out the web sites for beach rentals on Folly. Prices really go down in the fall. We stayed at Pavilion Watch in July and it was perfect...ocean front, short distance to beach, pool, private parking, great restaurants in the area. In Charleston, we took a carriage ride, toured the city via the ';treasure'; hunt set up by the Brass Pirate (which I am sure will be much better in cool weather), and ate at several good restaurants: T-Bonz. Bubba Gumps, Tommy Condon%26#39;s.

    Beach town?

Hey, thanks for the idea. Looks great... On your advisement, I%26#39;ve already booked a room at the Holiday Inn (which looks like the only hotel in the entire town???)... Gotta be better than Isle of Palms!

Sorry to here about your experience. Seaside Inn is probably not the best hotel to stay in. You should try Wild Dunes resort on Isle of Palms, or rent a nice home on IOP, which should make you stay more enjoyable. I would also advise you to try Seabrook Island (renting a home or villa there) which is very serene, or Kiawah Island (renting or also the hotel there called the Sanctuary) lots of activities to do there. I think that Folly Beach is a step down from IOP, but others do not. Folly Beach is much more, how shall I put this politically correct, ';free-spirited';. Septmeber could be cool to lay out on the beach and get some rays. If you really enjoy Mrytle Beach, than is could be that Charleston is just not the place for you; to each his own. If you really enjoy Myrtle Beach you may also think of trying Daytona Beach, or Virginia Beach.

Well, in my defense (LOL), I mostly like Myrtle Beach for its proximity to Murrells Inlet%26#39;s seafood, Brookgreen Gardens, and Huntington Beach State Park (featuring Atalaya)... So, no, I%26#39;m not the ';Daytona type'; (shudder)!!! Although I%26#39;ll admit to loving The Pavilion, too... : D

I think Folly will be a match. It%26#39;s only for a couple of days anyway???

';Free Spirited'; is definitely a good way to describe Folly. It%26#39;s quite the laid back community. Being a free spirit (from KY) myself, I enjoy Folly and am delighted to share some fairly useful tips:

The Holiday Inn is indeed the only hotel on the beach, and as long as you remember it%26#39;s a Holiday Inn you%26#39;re in good shape. It%26#39;s right on the beach, in the center of town and very convenient. Folly is on it%26#39;s own time schedule and the few shops and restaurants open and close ';on Folly time';, they open whenever they get up and get going, and close when they get ready to go home. I%26#39;m jealous. Dress is very casual. You are likely to see more dredlocks than pedicures, and the locals are friendly and helpful. It reminds me of Key West 30 years ago.

As you will soon see, beach cruisers are a popular method of transportation for most locals - rent one and go see the island. Take a right out of your hotel and cruise down to the wash out and watch the surfboarding. Take a left out of your hotel and cruise down toward the public beach, take any right turn to explore the ecclectic mix of homes, architecture and local flavor. Stop in Lost Dog Cafe at 106 W. Huron - great for brunch or lunch.

11 Center is right across the street from H.I. and has a great wine selection, and even better Tapas restaurant upstairs. Live music, I think on Thursdays and Sunday afternoon.

Although you wouldn%26#39;t know it%26#39;s even open from the exterior, River Cafe is always my first choice for special occassion meals. Hard to find, looks like it%26#39;s been closed for 20 years but has great prices, fabulous food %26amp; excellent service. Ask for directions.

For nightlife, walk out the front door of the hotel and cross the street to Snapper Jacks. There%26#39;s also the Sand Dollar. It%26#39;s a private club, you pay $1 for membership. Usually has great local bands.

Check out charlestoncitypaper.com for current happenings, things to do and places to eat.

Relax, enjoy the slower pace and have a great time!

All great tips; thanks!!! Sounds like just my speed... Was planning to rent a bike one day and tool on down to the lighthouse (and the park on the other side of the island; I%26#39;m quite the cyclist); would that be fairly ';safe';??? As for nightlight, I%26#39;m more the sit on the balcony and drink wine while listening to the waves type, but there%26#39;s also a candlelight tour of historic Charleston houses and gardens going on that week; if not too long a drive (and I%26#39;m not too chicken), will do.

    Thanks again!!!

Is it comparable to Tybee Island -- or better? We visited there in November, and it was pretty dead; also lots of cargo ships (ugh) passing by and plenty of signs warning about undertow and rip currents (not conducive to carefree swimming); I wouldn%26#39;t return.

If Brookgreen Gardens, Murrells Inlet, %26amp; Huntington Beach State Park are of interest, you want to stay at Litchfield Beach. Can%26#39;t believe no one mentioned it. We stayed this summer in the new condos at Litchfield Resort (NOT Litchfield Inn) and they were the nicest I have ever stayed in. They also have a hotel and many many choices of condos - oceanfront and not. There is also a wonderful bike path from there to Huntington Beach through the woods.

    SULFUR Pizza Anyone?

RE: Putrid Sulfur Odor of Hilton Head Water

I am positively baffled why in this day and age anyone puts up with disgusting sulfur in their water supply. Being a resident of HIlton Head often means having to take SULFUR SHOWERS day after day. It is positively repulsive.

Nowhere else in the nation do you see anyone put up with the rancid disgusting smell of sulfur the way they do in the likes of Hilton Head.

When you ask the locals why on earth they put up with this disgusting odor in their water supply. The water they wash in, make their food in, and wash clothes in, they just say ';Oh thats the south for ya';.

NNNnnooo. Not really. San Diego is on the exact same longitude as Hilton Head. And yet, voila! No disgusting sulfur scent in their water supply.

The odor is so repulsive that it actually prevents you from taking a shower. Its a daily ongoing thing and it is quite disgusting.

Some say, you have to just leave the water on for a while when it has been sitting for a while. Well Actually, No! That doesnt really help, because no matter how long you have the water on the Sulfur Scent does not go away. Its there day after day after day after day.

Most people who have never visited ';The South'; are unaware of disgusting odor of sulfur in sourthern water (AND YES THAT INCLUDES HILTON HEAD). I myself in all my travels around the world have never encountered it until I came to Hilton Head. It is positively disgusting. For such an elite destination, it is positively confusing.

Frankly I am curious why no one on earth tells you about it.

No travel channel, no guide, no anything ever tells you about the putrid disgusting odor of sulfur in water supply you use to take a shower, in your sink -- the locals just put up with it. And I find that to be very odd.

THEY SAY ITS THE WATER IN NYC, BOSTON %26amp; CHICAGO that makes for their great taste of Pizza. Out in Southern California, there are Pizza parlours that actually import water from New York City to achieve the fantastic pizza flavour ubiquotous at any one of the city%26#39;s 3000 pizza eateries. The imported water is bragging rights for a lot of these Pizzarias.

That is a distinction Hilton Head will never enjoy (HH Water in their Pizza) - as it contains such high levels of sulfur to not even make a shower possible. I actually am physically gagging now just thinking of that putrid Hilton Head Sulfur Water in Pizza. Gross!! That is absolutely repulsive.

To date I am absolutely flabergasted why no one on earth talks about this Sulfur Water Supply problem whose stink is there morning, noon and night. Each and every day, every week, every month. If you desire a sample of this putrid disgusting repulsive water, I tell you what I will do. I will send you a video of me taking a sample on any day that you choose, and will pack the bottle and send it to you - straight out of my shower, kitchen fawcet or anywhere else - courtesy of Hilton Head.

Who needs ipecac when they have Hilton Head Water?

    Hilton Head Water? Absolutely disgusting.

    For such a premier destination?

    To have this problem?

It is an oddity bar none.

    God bless.

    SULFUR Pizza Anyone?

    Morris Island Lighthouse

I was planning a trip to Charleston in September %26amp; was interested in going out to the Morris Island Lighthouse. I%26#39;ve read several forums where people had chartered boats to take them out there. I know the current is strong there, but what I was wondering is that if I go when it%26#39;s really low tide, can I just walk out or swim to the lighthouse, or is it absolutely necessary to go by boat? Any helpful information would be appreciated!

    Morris Island Lighthouse

I see I might be a bit late since you were supposed to come to Charleston in September, but just in case I will respond anyway -

I would NOT walk out. Even if it is shallow I wouldn%26#39;t. The rip currents are bad.

    Leaving for NMB this Friday...Help!

We are staying at Crescent Shores. We will be there from Sat Oct. 14 - Sat. Oct. 21. A few questions...

    1. What is the weather going to be like? Yes, I have looked at weather.com but I would rather hear it from a local.

    2. What kind of shopping is there? I have read online about Colonial Place Mall and Coastal Grand. How are they?

    3. We want to plan a day trip to a plantation. Any suggestions?

    Any other advice is welcome!

    Leaving for NMB this Friday...Help!

I love the beach this time of year --- granted the last few days havent been pleasent (that ol%26#39; nor %26#39; easter really put a damper on things) but the sun is shining today, temps in the mid 70%26#39;s and fluffy clouds on a Carolina Blue sky....thats October!

I would say for the next week you%26#39;ll see much of the same...I think you have maybe a 40 to 60% chance of rain one of those days, but that sometimes doesnt really mean it will rain....best advice is to check with our local weather guru, Ed Piotrowski (www.wpde.com)

As for shopping, you not only have 2 malls (Coastal Grande is the newest, but Colonial just went thru some major renovation) but two outlet malls (both are Tanger Outlets) one out on Rt 501 and the other located near Colonial Mall on Rt 17 North...then you have Broadway at the Beach (www.broadwayatthebeach.com) as well as Barefoot Landing (www.bflanding.com) these are both shopping, dining and entertainment complexes...alot of fun! THEN you also have some of the smaller shopping venues, like Seaboard commons, or The Island Shops down in the Pawleys Island area...and if you are into antiques...well, that a whole other story!

As for a ';plantation'; trip...I would head on down towards Charleston...a number of places you can stop along the way....you have the Hopswee Plantation about an hour south of MB, and a few other historical sites as you approach Awendaw (plus a REALLY great place to eat there, I think its called the See Wee Restaurant) and right before you get into Charleston you have Boone Hall Plantation....www.boonehallplantation.com

Plus, Charleston is a treat in itself....and do take one of the carriage rides thru the historical district, its amazing the things you can learn on those tours!

    :)

    Leaving for NMB this Friday...Help!

Laurie.... Barefoot Landing is about 2 minutes south of Crescent Shores, Colonial Mall is about 3-4 minutes away and Tanger Outlets at Hwy. 17 and Hwy. 22 is just past Colonial Mall on the left. You%26#39;ll love Crescent Shores; its very nice!

My wife always seemed to get her best deals at the 501 outlet stores.

We enjoyed Middleton Plantation more than Boone Hall. But a carriage ride through Charleston beats both.

Check out Brookgreen Gardens just south of MB on Hwy 17. It is a beautiful sculpture garden on the site of an old rice plantation. Very large. It has a restaurant on the premises. You could easily spend an entire day there, especially if you took the carriage ride to the old cemetery.

For a list of the October events:

    http://www.brookgreen.org/special_events.html

Aileen... SHHHHHHHH!!! We don%26#39;t want Brookgreen and Huntington Beach to get toooooo popular, now do we???

    Pet Friendly

Any know of any pet friend hotels in Myrtle Beach area that is ocean front? I know pet friendly accomodations are limited but just wondering what other people have found.

    Pet Friendly

I found a website a year or so ago that is a good place to start: www.petswelcome.com

It lists a few individual hotels in the MB area and some national chains as well.

By the way, I recognized ';Lowell, NC';. We%26#39;re just down the road in SC. I%26#39;ve been driving to Charlotte most weeks this summer and have seen the exit for your town many times. Nice to see some ';neighbors'; on here.

    John

    Pet Friendly

Unfortunately they are none of the resort type hotels that will allow pets on that website. I have found a couple condos or houses so far. I can understand why but it sure would be nice to take my sweet Bichon Lulu. Next summer if time permits, as we have 2 Disney trips planned, we are hoping to just rent an ocean front house @ Carolina Beach.

I have always lived in Belmont or Lowell. I love it but then again this is home.

We%26#39;re lucky that we%26#39;ve got a neighbor who loves our dog, and she loves visiting as well.

We%26#39;ve also got 2 trips to Disney planned in the next six months. Actually, my first time to the Orlando area, and my wife hasn%26#39;t been there since she was about 12. As adults with no kids, we%26#39;re going to be kids ourselves! A bit off topic, but this seems to be your post anyway.

home.bellsouth.net/p/pwp-barth has some pictures of my dog, the only daughter I have.

Here is a web site for it.

    http://www.funbeaches.com/pets.html

Don%26#39;t worry Barthy I have a problem staying topic sometimes.

When are you going to Disney? We have not set any dates but I want to go sometime late April or early May and then during the fall. We absolutely love Disney and try to go once a year. Even though we have a 7 year old (nephew but had him since day he came home from hospital) we still act like kids. I am sure you have done lots of research but if you want any website and other message boards send me an email (disneynutangie@yahoo.com) or send me an email if you just want to talk about Disney. I am crazy for it...lol. My hubby says a little obsessed and yeah he is right.

Looked at your poochie and how sweet. I would love to take Lulu to the beach next summer so she can play around on the beach early mornings and late evening. Notice a sheriff car in the bacground. You or someone in your family work in the law enforcement. My husband is a city police officer within Gaston County.

    Hey Angie,

I sent you an email over the weekend. Looking forward to reading your posts in the future as we seem to have some similar travel interests.

    John

When I was there last month, I saw many ocean-front motels that advertised that they allow pets. They were nothing fancy though, certainly not the resort type... just your basic motel accomodations. I wish I could remember the names of some of them.

I recall seeing a couple of those. I was hoping to find a resort. I can understand why.... hotels get worn out and you throw a pet in and especially one that is not well trained and its disaster. Imagine the complaints then....not that I am saying a complaint is not valid because I have had my share. I think next summer if time allows we are going to try a home rental @ Ocean Lakes campground and take our little poochie.

Compass Cove is pet friendly. I stayed there in August. I didn%26#39;t bring my dog, but they do accept them. They have a cute little area w/a fire hydrant and doggie bags. Not a bad hotel either...I enjoyed my stay there.

Another option is a condo or house through VRBO website. If you are renting in the off season some will rent nightly or for a weekend. There are lots of pet friendly places.

  • Looking for a Ocean Front with Jacuzzi Room

I and my husband will be visiting MB Oct 18-24 we are looking for a room for the week with the following ammenities. First and foremost an Ocean Front Room, Second a room that has some comfortable seating such as a couch or couple of stuffed chairs and my husband likes a jacuzzi tub. Anyone have any suggestions we%26#39;ve always stayed at The Carribean on past trips but might like to try another hotel in the same general area. We%26#39;re going to try just winging it this time and finding a room once we get there, at this time of year thats not usually a concern. Thanks everyone

Looking for a Ocean Front with Jacuzzi Room

One that I have stayed at that has these amenties is the Holiday Sands South. It is a older propety undergoing major renovations to the outside and all. It anit nowere near the par of the Carribean. THis just has your basic rooms and amenties. It does have to amenties that you are asking for though. It is rated #17 in myrtle BEach threw TA. Also, yes it is oceanfront.

Here is there web address: http://www.holidaysandssouth.com/

Looking for a Ocean Front with Jacuzzi Room

I do think the Comfort Inn and Suites located more to the south end of the beach has ';jacuzzi'; suites....and so does the Ocean Reef (the old MB Martinique) which is located at the north end of MB up in the ';avenues';area.....I%26#39;m sure there are a few more out there too.

Coming in in late Oct. you should be able to have your pick of what you want.

    :)

lorandgary-check the reviews of the Comfort Inn, I don%26#39;t think they%26#39;re very good

Another hotel with jacuzzi tub would be Crown Reef. But I would look at the reviews first.

FYI stayed at the Crown Reef year before last and was not impressed. The lighting on the outside drew our attention, but we were dissappointed. The Yachtsman is still our favorite couple hotel. But is it closed for renovations now until spring. Check out the Sea Island Inn. It is new and the rates are reasonable.

    Good luck!

since I was just there for a week, I was able to see the buildings and then read the reviews back home. It seems to me that some of the hotels that look the coolest from the outside aren%26#39;t reviewed too well. Not that the rating system from Trip Advisor is perfect, but still check out where a hotel is rated, and most importantly read all the reviews, not just how many stars they give. I%26#39;ve seen bad reviews because of a slow check-in

Vacation solution for family w/ different interests

We are trying to rent a beachfront location for my dads 60th b-day. The problem: Mom %26amp; dad are actives who love golf and tennis. Brother and wife have 2 babies and need child friendly activities. Myself and sister like to hit the beach and pool and need some happening activities at night.(aka bars or clubs) Any advice? Right now we are thinking of renting a house on IOPWD. Thanks for any comments!

Vacation solution for family w/ different interests

What time of year will you be visiting? Wild Dunes has good golf. Kiawah and Seabrook Island have great golf and tennis. Pools are readily available at Seabrook as long as you rent from someone who is a member of the club (you have to have an amenity card to access the amenities:-) ) and you%26#39;re going from April thru October. Some pools do shut down during the fall/winter. Kiawah has changed its pool rules. You%26#39;ll only have access if you rent a home with a neighborhood pool.

Bar-hopping will be limited on any of the islands. Going into Charleston is really your only option if you have to have ';night life';. Children%26#39;s activities vary from island to island. What ages are the kids?

    Hope that helps.

Vacation solution for family w/ different interests

If you rent on Kiawah from the Kiawah Island Golf Resort, you will have access to the Resort pools at Night Heron Park and at the Tennis Club. If you are renting from another provider or an individual owner on Kiawah, consider a cottage at Inlet Cove, which has a wonderful community pool and a river side dock with glorious views of the sunset. Other Kiawah areas, like Sparrow Pond and Atlantic Beach, also have community pools. Some homes have their own pools. Be sure to inquire when renting.

    Cafe Europa

We just returned from two weeks at Hilton Head. We were pleased to visit Alligator Grill, Hemingways, Sunset Grill and Marley%26#39;s to have great meals. We returned to Cafe Europa as long time regulars to have an all time worst experience. We visited on a Wednesday night about 7 when the restaurant was only moderately busy. The service was inattentive approaching poor. The bread was stale, room temp, sub-heat and eat roll quality. One entree was adequate, a grouper dish. I ordered the Shrimp Daufuskie. The shrimp and crab stuffing were mediocre; the hollandaise sauce was umber grease. Vegentables on both plates were absolute splooge. I%26#39;ve had better in TV dinners. In keeping with the management%26#39;s concern about quality, nobody asked about our food or service. Further, this meal might have been the most expensive of the trip. I am confident nobody is paying attention at Cafe Europa these days. At one time it was an OK place. Not any more.

    Cafe Europa

Cafe Europa changed ownership a number of years ago. It is no longer on anyones list of a goto place.

On the otherhand the Quarterdeck and their Topside section is now the preferred restaurant for the Calibogue View.

Thanks for the info. We%26#39;re leaving Saturday for a week at HHI, and five years ago, Cafe Europa was one of our favorite restaurants. Thanks for the heads up. We also like Alexander%26#39;s in Palmetto Dunes -- is this restaurant still topnotch?

It is now owned by the group that also owns the Old Oyster Factory and RedFish. The menu is similar to that at the Old Oyster Factory. The owner of this chain was the original owner of Alexanders.

    Thanksgiving & Pet Friendly Accommodations

We%26#39;re considering spending Thanksgiving in Charleston. We would be there from the 22nd to 26th. We have a DS(14) %26amp; a mini-pinscher that travels with us. I%26#39;m fairly certain we want to stay in the Historic District. Once we reach our destination, we%26#39;d rather not drive anywhere, but would if there was something that we ';must do';. Nice accommodations with many things within walking distance are ideal for us. We%26#39;re interested in tours, comedy, dinner shows, etc. that a 14 yr. old boy would like. We, including our DS, also enjoy fine dining. We live in Florida %26amp; aren%26#39;t interested in going to the beach. The only shops we like looking in are specialty shops. We don%26#39;t enjoy flea markets, outlet malls, regular malls, etc.

Are there any special events that weekend that we shouldn%26#39;t miss? We%26#39;d love to find a special meal for Thanksgiving dinner. How about Christmas activities? Anything going on that early?

All suggestions for pet friendly accommodations, things to do, %26amp; places to eat will be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Thanksgiving %26amp; Pet Friendly Accommodations

    What is your price limit on a ';hotel?';

It%26#39;s been a very long time since I stayed in Charleston for Thanksgiving but I think my extended family and I stayed at the Charleston Place before it was the Charleston Place. We had dinner there and enjoyed it but that was years ago. I%26#39;m sure someone could offer a better suggestion.

The majority of places to stay in DT Charleston, will not allow pets at any price. Charleston is strict on animal waste when you walk your dog too (you must carry dog waste baggies).

The Charleston Place is pet friendly for a fee and has a good location. If you dont like the Charleston Place, your best bet is with a B%26amp;B because basically that is the only hotel in downtown that will take pets. The Residence Inn Downtown Riverview will also accept pets but I cant tell you anything about it.

As far as places to eat... try using the search option located towards the top of the page. If you cant find the info you seek just post back.

    Other Pet Friendly Options:

    http://marketinn.com/

    http://www.meetingstreetsuites.com/ (NOT a B%26amp;B)

I think you will find 4 days is more than enough to discover most of downtown Charleston. IMO a 14 year old boy might get bored after a few days depending on what he likes. I would suggest you take one day to visit a plantatio.

    A few websites:

    www.heritagefederation.com/passport.html

    www.carolinafoodpros.com/home/default.aspx

    For Teens:

    Carriage ride

Aquarium (better for younger kids) %26amp; IMAX

    Museums

    Ghost Walking tours

    Boat Tours- Ft. Sumter

Hope this helps get you started...

    Thanksgiving %26amp; Pet Friendly Accommodations

Thanks for all the great info, %26amp; the links. I haven%26#39;t looked at all of them yet, but will. I did look at Charleston Place, %26amp; the cheapest rate was $539/ night. We were thinking in the $200 range. We would probably go a little higher, if we had to.

Unfortunately, restaurant rankings on here don%26#39;t help much. They seem to be ranked by most popular not best food. The most popular restaurants don%26#39;t necessarily have the best food. I wish they were ranked by quality not value.

I%26#39;ve never heard of Plantatio. I%26#39;ll definitely research it. We plan to do a Ghost tour, %26amp; probably a carriage ride. I haven%26#39;t really had time to do a lot of planning yet.

That would be ** plantation** Spelling error.

What I meant was to search past posts and not TA%26#39;s ranking. A lot of the time the same general questions are asked. When you use the search function, you get a lot of info in a few of seconds- instead of waiting for someone to post back with the same info :)

Usually key words like restaurants or fine dinning should work.

Again if it doesnt work... post back.

Good luck with the hotel. A pet friendly hotel at a good price, location, and during a holiday... might be a tall order. Most places charge any where from 20-75 dollars extra per night for a pet.... plus tax. Either way it is not going to be cheap.

Some of the charleston forum regulars might be able to help you more in the morning.

    FYI

I was just looking at some past posts on walking tours, restaurants, carriage tours, and ect. Lots of good info... definitely try reviewing past posts :) At least a good place to get you started...

    Enjoy!

I didn%26#39;t realize we would have a hard time finding accommodations . We may end up having to go someplace else. I%26#39;ll keep researching, before I give up though.

Surely check back tomorrow to see what others say. I might be way off base.

I like to travel with my small dog when all possible too. She loves to travel and we love having her along. In fact we are looking for mountain cabin we can take her too for later this fall/winter.

With planning pervious trips I had a hard time finding a decent place to stay (looking only downtown) that allowed pets and wasn’t outrageous. Perhaps I wasn’t looking in the right places. But ever hotel in downtown Charleston I wanted to stay at would not take pets. It seems that the privately owned places (such as BBs and lofts) are more willing to make exceptions for our furry friends.

Again do check back... I%26#39;m not a local so there might be other options I dont know of.

    I wish you luck...

There are lots of ';pet friendly'; hotels in the Historic District. You can stay at the Indigo Inn~ which you will see on this web-site that they have wonderful reviews. There is a pet fee of $20 per pet per night. You can also try the Meeting Street Suites~ They have a $25 pet fee or the Vendue Inn and they have a $50 1 time pet fee. All of these accomadations are right in the center of downtown and they would be more reasonable than Charleston Place.

As for what is going on that time of the year, I would suggest you go to our web-site www.charlestoncvb.com and click on events and you can scroll to the month that you are visiting and there is a calendar you can print.

Also another suggestion is that when you arrive in Charleston you can come to the Visitors Center and we usually have a print out of all of the Holiday Events and we have a print out of what restaurants are open for the Holidays and their menus.

I hope that this helps and that you still plan on visiting Charleston.

We went in May with a 25 lb Schnoodle -- had a good time, but found out about a local magazine on our last day LOW COUNTRY DOG -- get one! It will list places you can take the dog.

FYI - Old South allowed us to take him on a ride. But you know, our boy is very very good. He rode in dad%26#39;s lap.

Cannot take your dog into the outdoor market.

Marriott%26#39;s Residence Inn in Mt. Pleasant charged $75 one time fee for the dog. Gave us a ground floor room near a door so it was easy for walks at night. Lot%26#39;s of great walking area around it too.

Isle of Palms has a nice beach, provides doggie baggies on boardwalk to the shore, pick up extras!

Around that time should be the James Island Festival of Lights. It%26#39;s a county park that you drive through and look at Christmas (excuse me, ';holiday';) lights. There is a place to roast marshmallows, shop and eat a little too. It%26#39;s something nice to go to for a short while in the evening.

    Autumn in Charleston

I have a question - would you recommend visiting Charleston and SC in the fall (early November).

I heard it is absolutely lovely in spring when everything is blooming. But how about fall? What%26#39;s the waether likely to be like? Colorfull folliage?

    Everyone advice/suggestions are greately appreciated.

    Thank you

    Autumn in Charleston

Not a lot of autumn foliage change as Charleston is subtropical and the palmettos and live oaks will still be green. Flowers will still be blooming, although they are different flowers from those that bloom in the spring. The marsh grass turns a wondrful golden color. The weather will be mild and, possibly, quite warm. Hurricane season is over, so the risk of storms is minimal. Early November is one of our favorite times to visit Charleston.

Looking for breakfast places in Charleston, SC

we enjoyed a delicoius breakfast at poogans porch. excellent service and fresh fruit

Poogans actually does not do breakfast, just a weekend brunch.

Try the Sweetwater Cafe which is not far from the market. They had delicious blueberry pancakes; they also served great hash browns, eggs, steak...all at a reasonable price.

Joseph%26#39;s and Dana%26#39;s are within a block of each other.

    Both friendly,informal, and good food.

Diana%26#39;s, Joseph%26#39;s and if you have access to a car, Hominy Grill. All are good choices with friendly staff and good food.

If it is nice out and you want more of a picnic breakfast, try Kennedy%26#39;s which is actually near Holiday Inn dowtown. It is basically a bakery, but good. Can%26#39;t eat in there. Also, try Saffron which is good. It is on East Bay street. Neither of the suggestions are close to your hotel though, but are within walking distance.

If you want REAL southern food, go to justine%26#39;s! It%26#39;s a short walk from the market, and go early because the line wraps around the building! Thats when you know it%26#39;s good. Famous chef Rachael Ray enjoyed Joseph%26#39;s when she went on her show ';40$ a day.'; There%26#39;s always atlanta bread company too.

Definitely, Joseph%26#39;s. The ambience is ';simple';; the food is great.

    Best of the Candlelight Tours?

The most beautiful homes are right on the battery in charleston. They are truly southern and magnificant. Not too far a ways down from rainbow row, you can walk along the Battery and admire the verandas and huge southern porches.

There are also many plantations to choose from. There%26#39;s Boone Hall, Magnolia (which has a great restaurant) and Drayton Hall (which was featured on the Travel Channel) for it%26#39;s hauntings.

    Best of the Candlelight Tours?

For Candlelight tour, do The Battery if you can get a ticket. For plantation, visit Middleton Place for pure spendour. Drayton Hall is an authentic and unrestored historic home - the only one in the area never destroyed by war or natural disaster.

I should point out that the homes in Charleston%26#39;s historic district are general MUCH older than the homes in Newport. They are show places, but of an earlier era. Also, they are town residences, so they sit on smaller plots of land than the summer palaces of Newport. The details are exquisite. The gardens are magnificent.

    Tanger outlets in North Charleston

Has anyone been out to the new Tanger Outlets in North Charleston. I have been reading on virtualtourist.com to stay out of North Charleston. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Tanger outlets in North Charleston

Now, I%26#39;ve posted here before that North Charleston is not my favorite part of the lowcountry, but I don%26#39;t buy the ';stay out of NC'; line. There are parts of the city that are really nice, and Mayor Summey is trying to clean it up some; although I think he would be wise to stop trying so hard to expand his city and work more at making what he has a nicer place.

I went to the Tanger in the period between shops opening and the grand opening, so not all of the shops were open yet. I liked it. That entire area is going to be a great place for folks to stay - theres the Tanger, Sam%26#39;s, lots of other shops, the NC Colliseum.

The outlet mall is just off of the interstate, so you don%26#39;t have to worry about getting lost and ending up in a bad part of town, so just come on down and enjoy yourself.

    Tanger outlets in North Charleston

    Floski,

Thanks for your help. Are the outlets hard to get to from Kiawah Island?

Well, Kiawah is kind of like Emerald City in that it is the jewel that is literally at the end of the road.

I forgot to mention in my earlier post that Tanger is not only just off of I-26, but it is also very close to the Charleston International Airport, so that makes it even easier to get to.

I-26 is the main artery into the Charleston area, coming from Asheville and straight through Columbia. So, to answer your question - yes and no. It%26#39;s easy to get to either on your way into or out of Charleston, even if by airplane. But once you get onto Kiawah, you may not want to ever leave!!

I definitly recommend going to the Tanger Outlets. Being brand new, they are so pretty and have lots of store options. North Charleston is not a great area, however, the outlets are directly off the interstate and not in a bad part of town. You can%26#39;t get lost. Plus, all the items your shopping for are so much cheaper, it%26#39;s a great bargain! The food court is not open yet, but I still would not pass up the chance to go.

The outlets are about a 45 minute drive from Kiawah. Go back out the Bohicket/Main Road to route 17, follow 17 toward Charleston to 526. Take 526 toward the airport. You will see signs for the outlets.

In my opinion, it would be best to visit the outlets on your way to or from Kiawah.

  • Are the Jellyfish still a problem right now at MB?

We%26#39;re getting ready to leave in 2 weeks and wanted to know. Thanks!

Are the Jellyfish still a problem right now at MB?

We just returned, and saw only one washed up on shore, and from the pier we saw a few out in the ocean. I really don%26#39;t think this is the season that there is a lot of trouble with them. (But I don%26#39;t know for sure I am not a marine biologist!)

You will be fine, have a great time and a swim in the ocean for me!

Are the Jellyfish still a problem right now at MB?

There are ALWAYS jelly fish in the ocean. There is ALWAYS a chance that you could get stung. There is ALWAYS a chance that you could get bitten by a shark, nibbled by a crab, stabbed by a stringray and finned by a catfish. You could also be spattered on the highway by a car or shot by a crazed gunman.

As the water gets cooler, there are fewer and fewer jelly fish. Maybe even none. And there is no way to tell if there will be any on your particular section of the beach. Even if you do get stung, it %26#39;s not a terrible thing. You could stay at home and be stung by bees, hornets, wasps or be bitten by a neighbor%26#39;s dog.

Relax. Plan to enjoy yourself and quit worrying so much about things that you cannot change.. Zillions of people go to Myrtle Beach and DON%26#39;T get strung.

You and your family will have a ball!

We were there last week, and did not see any. However, the Lifeguard%26#39;s did have the blue flags up on 9/22 - but I still did not see any, or hear of anyone being stung.

    Have a nice trip :)

We were there the week after Labor day. On day 3 my husband was stung in 3 places. I put neosporin on it directly and he took benedryl for the itching. He%26#39;s a tough guy and never complained. I passed that day on the ocean but didn%26#39;t miss one after that! Try not to worry though, the odds are against your getting stung. The other post was right...the cooler the water the less likely to have a problem. Have a wonderful time on your vavaction!

Thanks for all your posts! :) And I will have a wonderful time, I am sure! I can%26#39;t wait! Yeah, I can get stung right in my front yard by bees, that%26#39;s true. I%26#39;m not going to worry about it anymore.... hopefully we will all avoid them tho.

Don%26#39;t forget that jelly fish don%26#39;t punture the skin like a bee or a wasp. It%26#39;s the long tendrils that float along behind them that do the damage. The jelly fish doesn%26#39;t attack or chase. They just float around.

I am sure that you have been in a blackberry patch with bare legs and had a branch whip across your leg. Stings like the dickins, doesn%26#39;t it!! It%26#39;s like that, except that the tendrils tend to stick to the skin a little and they do have more toxin in them than blackberry vines do.

The old fashion cure was simply to go sit on the beach and pack the affected part in wet sand. After five or ten minutes, you will feel the pain diminishing. It works. My husband and I and all three of the our children were stung one day. The pain lasted a few hours. I%26#39;ve had wasp and bee stings that hurt for days!!

So if you see something floating out there that looks like an old dirty plastic grocery bag. Stay away. The stuff that does the damage is floating underwater nearby.

Gotcha! :) We will keep a lookout for them for sure! Yeah, I%26#39;ve picked plenty a blackberries in my days.... we used to walk way back behind my parents house for a mile or so and pick a 5 gallon bucket full... talk about some yummy blackberry jelly ;)

my husband was stung while we were there. The lifeguard told him that the saly in the ocean would help the pain. He was stung behind his knee, but twisted his other kneee trying to get out of the water. Two things that increased the risk were the warmer temperatures (in the 80s that day) and the tide was coming in. He said it stung for about an hour. I have heard vinegar helps.

Forty plus trips to the beach and have never been stung by jellyfish. Might happen next trip. Might not. Nothing to worry about. Better odds of getting finger smashed in condo door.

Beware. All the tips and advice we%26#39;ve given you. We forgot one. If you open front door of condo while oceanfront sliding glass door is open. Get out of the way. Door will slam shut.

Would love to be there see your face when you see ocean for first time. Have fun.

Thanks for the tip on the door, hopefully it will avoid a bloody nose... LOL

My best friend, Tonya, told me, ';you BETTER call me as SOON as you get there! I wanna hear your expression when you first see the ocean!!!'; She can%26#39;t wait for me to see it either... LOL

I%26#39;m glad everyone%26#39;s excited for me! That makes me feel special... :)

We have saved up 426.00 to take along, and may have more after all the bills are paid. I figured (and this is overfiguring, of course--better to OVER figure, than to UNDER figure and not have enough). But this is my figuring.

    426.00 minus 150.00 for gas = 276.00

276.00 minus 100.00 to eat out two nights (we%26#39;re cooking in two nights) = 176.00

So 176.00 for spending on whatever we want, I plan on getting a few souviners for me and the girls while we%26#39;re down there... T-shirts, seashell ankle bracelets, etc....

Plus we have like, 60-70 dollars in change that we%26#39;ve saved up to go on the groceries. SO we are doing good!!!!

    Car Hire Charleston Airport

    Hi

We are international visitors, and are looking to book car hire at Charleston airport SC, but on Dollar international website, Charleston does not exist, neither does Myrtle Beach.

Can anyone tell me which is the best airport to hire a car from, within SC?

    Car Hire Charleston Airport

the dollar website is awful on this you are right, if you enter charleston sc it says not available BUT if you enter the airport code CHS it comes up. i rented from dollar at CHS a few months ago - so use CHS! be sure to sign up for the express club - quicker and you might get a discount code. also, check the rates every few days - in many locations they flucuate and if they go down you can rebook at the cheaper rate. las veags and many Florida locations this happens often, not sure about CHS, supply %26amp; demand dictates the rates.

    Car Hire Charleston Airport

    Hi

    Thanks for the advice.

    I followed your instructions, however, there is no option on the Dollar website to input ';CHS';

I have not rented at Myrtle but I have at Charleston. My last rental was with Hertz. I got a great rate and good service. Car rental is easy at the airport. Best wishes.

If you are staying in the Downtown area--Enterprise and Budget Rental agencies are at the Airport and Downtown Charleston. If you would like to rent a car and driver Prime Time of Charleston may can offer assistance 843-478-6778. Good Luck!

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated

    Ben

We always use Hertz at CHS. We had the gold membership so our car is in the lot waiting for us. All the car rental desks are across from the baggage claim area. I%26#39;ve watched couples split up, one person get the luggage while one rents the car.

The rental car lot is located right outside the baggage claim area. I%26#39;ve walked farther in the Walmart parking lot;-)

    Myrtle Beach new hotel

We%26#39;ve booked rooms at a new hotel/condo The Grand Atlantic...being a regular in the fall at Myrtle, I can%26#39;t quite place where this is located. Anyone know what it is near? Also can you EVER get discount tickets to any of the shows? Seems like some people have them...but we never do!! (Then there%26#39;s all those people selling time-shares...offering them.)

Any info is appreciated. Anything new thats fun since last October?

    charlie

    Myrtle Beach new hotel

It is located right beside the Reef Resort. About 17th ave S. It is right up above crown Reef and compass cove.

    Myrtle Beach new hotel

About the only discounts that you will find, besides those offered by the timeshares folks, would be a locals discount (which that doesnt happen real often), or kids discounts...sometimes if you call and ask if they are offering any ';specials'; you may be surprised, as a number of these ';discounts'; are not published.

    :)

Have you heard anything about the Grand Atlantic?

    Charlie....

I dont think that they have opened yet...have driven by the property a few times...more to the south end of the beach. Last time by, they had pretty much completed that outside, except for the landscaping...looks nice...pretty large property, fills its block on the beach pretty well. I know that there are a number of new properties at that end of the beach.

  • November

I was wondering is there anything to do during November? I had stayed during the summer one year and had so much fun at that place called the boardwalk? Does anyone know if that place is open year round? Would this time of year be impossible to find anything to do? Thanks!

    November

Broadway at the Beach is open year round..the hours are a bit different than in the summer...but as for the clubs, still the same, just a different crowd --- golf season is still in swing that time of year so you%26#39;ll see a number of golfers out.

There is alot to do in November...and with alot less crowds and a bit less cost! Its nothing like summer, but still a good time!

Charleston, SC-What's the best time of year to visit?

I have heard the best time to visit Charleston, SC is between October and March/April.... is this true? and what is the average temperature in April?

Charleston, SC-What's the best time of year to visit?

I think the Fall is better -- Spring tends to be buggy -- and muggy ..

April it is usually in the 70%26#39;s maybe some 80%26#39;s -- also Spring and into Summer ( really year round if it rains alot -- but mainly Spring / Summer Thundershowers) BE AWARE of the Tide schedule and learn the flood prone areas -- where you are planning to stay -- also make sure you are aware of roads that flood .

Charleston, SC-What's the best time of year to visit?

I think that April and October are the best months. Both have more moderate temps and the humidity is not too bad then. In April LOTS of things will be blooming and the gardens are beautiful. If I was forced to choose, I would pick April for that reason. Usually April is mid to upper 70%26#39;s, altho some years it is only in the 60%26#39;s, but that is uncommon.

Look on weatherchannel.com for Charleston and you can find all kinds of info on average temps, rainfall, etc.

March can be cold. Brrrr. We%26#39;ve been some years where we had to break out the sweaters, hats, and gloves. April is a popular month. If you will be renting a home, you%26#39;ll be competing with families on spring/Easter break. If May is an option, and your renting, you might be able to get an owner to discount rates a little (I just reduced my May 2007 rates on my home). For some reason, people don%26#39;t pick May as a month to travel. I suspect because families vacation around their childrens%26#39; school breaks.

Locals say October is the best!

    Eliza

April, April, April! I just love my home city during the month of April. The gnats are usually gone and we still have some time before the 90%26#39;s arrive. The gardens alone are worth the visit. The azaleas are in full bloom at Magnolia Gardens and it is truly a sight to behold. Plan your trip now since many things will fill up in April. Good luck!

    Late Oct. or early Nov.

    Favorite: October into early November

Next favorite: late April into early May

Do you rent out your villa at Kiawah?

    Thanks for asking.

We actually have two places on Kiawah. One (on Night Heron Pond, in the ';Parkside'; area) we rent out through The Kiawah Island Golf Resort%26#39;s villa and homes rental program. The other place we just enjoy using for ourselves. I may get back into renting directly to guests on my own. At the moment, I am too busy planning our daughter%26#39;s wedding, which will be on Kiawah later this year.

If anyone needs advice about locations and amenities of any sort of Kiawah rental, I am happy to try to help. We have been visiting Kiawah and watching the island develop for the past 30 years. We have been in lots of homes and villas over that time!

I have lived here for 10 years, for college and work. If you are going to visit, the best time, without a doubt is October- November or April- May. June is too crowded and July and August is the price we pay to live here.

Best things to do- (trust me, my family visits all the time)

    Ghost tours in October

    Spoleto in May

    Taste of Charleston in October

    Any show at Dockstreet Theatre

    Walk around College of Charleston

    Any plantation in spring

    Walk the new bridge.

Any beach, Sullivan%26#39;s is the most peaceful.

    Walk the Battery-

    Visit the Citadel-

If you can find it, go eat at Moe%26#39;s (not the Southwestern place)

Talk to the locals, they will give the info on the best places.

Rule- Do not visit any chains, whether restaurants or shops. I would

suggest go where you can only go in Charleston.

Do you mean Moe%26#39;s Crosstown Tavern on Rutledge Street?

Great suggestions for fun in Charleston.

My sweetie and I are taking a cross-country road trip next August and we%26#39;d like to stay in hotels or motels that have that real vintage vibe. We don%26#39;t have the trip mapped out yet so all towns will be considered.

I love the Safari Inn, in Burbank California. Sweet Motel with pool and vintage neon but modern facilities.

If you have a recommendation of someplace unusual, that works too.

    Thanks for any help!

The Quality Inn Ambassador in Fayetteville, NC; the Quality Inn in Perry, GA; and the Quality Inn Breeze Manor in Breezewood, PA are all properties that date back to the %26#39;50%26#39;s and have been affiliated with Quality back when it was called Quality Courts United. They%26#39;re of the classic motel style, with a single floor building spread out over a large plot of land. Also look at Clark%26#39;s Inn And Restaurant in Santee, SC. The Sun Set Inn in Manning, SC is a former Howard Johnson%26#39;s and some of their rooms are straight out of a 1960%26#39;s Hojo%26#39;s ad (i.e., never been overhauled).

Thanks for all the info :)

Definitely check out ';South of the Border'; on I-95 on the border of North Carolina/South Carolina. Looks straight out of the ';Brady Bunch'; era... It%26#39;s more like a motor lodge, but very vintage indeed!

We stayed there 2 years ago and it was not bad at all... definitely worth checking out.

  • Charleston to Philadelphia

Can anybody tell me the options for going from Charleston to Philadelphia please?

I would prefer to go by train to see more of the countryside but don%26#39;t know whether that%26#39;s feasible.

Presumably it%26#39;s a lot quicker by air but are there direct flights and what%26#39;s the difference in price?

Are there any coach/bus services even apart from Greyhound?

    Many thanks

    Charleston to Philadelphia

YOu have at least 4 ways to go from Charleston (CHS) to Philadelphia (PHL)

    1. Drive yourself in a car. Probably would take around 12 hours.

    2. Yes, there are straight flights without stops, basically on USAirways. See their website for pricing.

    3. Greyhound (bus) which will take at least teh same amount of time as driving yourself.

    4. Amtrack. Depend on what class of service you want and can take easily a whole day.

    Oceanfront Dining???

Anyone know of a good seafood restaurant overlooking the Atlantic? I know there are several overlooking water at Broadway, but looking for something nice where you can watch the tide come in.

I scanned through the sticky of restaurant recommendations and did not see anything.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Oceanfront Dining???

    Sea Captain%26#39;s House

    Oceanfront Dining???

Yep, Sea Captain%26#39;s house. Great food too.

There was a thng about that on the SC Channel last weekend. THe resturants looked nice.

Many hotels offer ocean front resturants also.

I recommend Gulf Stream Cafe at Garden City. Although it does not sit directly on the Atlantic, it does overlook the the water between Garden city and Murrells Inlet. It has to have the best sunset s have seen here, if not the only restaurant with a great sunset! I have wonderful pictures I have taken over the years. And, to make it even better, the food is always great! Make sure to call ahead, and plan to be there about 45 minutes before sunset for the best view!

Most definitely Sea Captains House! FABULOUS food! They do get fairly crowded at dinner time but it is well worth the wait. They also do breakfast %26amp; lunch as well...it is wonderful no matter what time you go. I go quite a bit for lunch and they do a super daily lunch special. Check out their website (www.seacaptains.com) to get some history about the place, see the menu and view the daily lunch specials. Their She Crab Soup is out-of-this-world! :-) Enjoy!

Damon%26#39;s is a great oceanfront loction. Close to the Springmaid Pier and right next to Downwind Sails. Lots of oceanfront seating both inside and outside, very pretty area, good food.

    GiraffeE

    Thanks everyone.

Sea Captain%26#39;s sounds like the place to try.

I forgot about Damons but I don%26#39;t like it so I ould not reccomend it.

How about Pier 14 around 14th Avnue North and the Ocean in Myrtle Beach...good variety...really the only ';true'; Pier restaurant...

Nibbles in Surfside is a pier restarant also. They ahve really good food too. My favorite is Sea Captain%26#39;s House...hands down! Murrels Inlet has lots of ones on the water.

  • Best Barbeque??????????

    Hi All,

I will be in Myrtle Nov 16-19 and am looking for some good BBQ. I will be coming from New Jersey. So if anyone has sugestions for the best BBQ in Myrtle or along I-95 in Virginia or N.C. please let me know.

    Thanks!!!!!

    Best Barbeque??????????

From one ';yankee'; to another- I was just there for a week, and it seems like down south everyone has BBQ. Signs were everywhere. They may even be BBQ%26#39;ing ice cream for all I know. You will have many to choose from. Hopefully someone will offer advice on the best ones. Enjoy your trip to MB. I know I just did.

    Best Barbeque??????????

Well are you looking for North Carolina Style BBQ or just the regular BBQ?

North Carolina BBQ (good NC BBQ) is hard to find these days. But there are a few places. The only one that is halfway decent off of 95 would Smithfield. www.smithfieldschicken.com

They serve the North Carolina style bbq and there are several locations along the 95 corridor.

Regular or Texas/Memphis/Kansas style bbq, I can%26#39;t help you there. I personally don%26#39;t like that style. Unless it%26#39;s the ribs. And Sticky Fingers in Myrtle Beach is pretty good.

My uncle (who is from NY and loves BBQ) swore that Little Pigs was the BEST he had ever had. (or is it Three LIttle Pigs....something like that) Anyway, try that place!

My choices for BBQ in this area would be Three Little Pigs (or Little Pigs...thats what I call it!), which is located at the corner of 62nd Ave N and Rt 17 Bypass in MB, The Pig and Chicken located on Rt 17 Business in Garden City (just south of MB) and Stickey Fingers located out at Coastal Grande Mall......

    :)

Pig and Chicken has some great BBQ

Pig and Chicken has some great BBQ

Three Little Pigs is the best! Wish i had some right now lol !!

Three Little Pigs is the best! Wish i had some right now lol !!

Do these places that you all have recommended serve ';Eastern'; North Carolina BBQ? Or is it the other type of BBQ? I would like to go there if it%26#39;s NC style.

Three Little Pigs %26amp; Pig %26amp; Chicken have the best BBQ in town! Enjoy!

How long should I stay, when do I go and how do I get there?

I%26#39;ve been reading ';tom jadg'; trip report and found it very interesting and informative.

Virtually all the package holidays I%26#39;ve seen on both UK and US websites spend a maximum of 3 nights in Charleston which seem to cover both the city itself and the plantations outside. ';Tom jadg'; spent 4 days in Charleston without going either on the river or out to the plantations so I am wondering whether I should travel independently and thus be able to spend a longer and perhaps more leisurely time.

I was planning to go in late March/early April or is that peak season and more crowded than normal?

I%26#39;d also be grateful to hear how people arrive from across the ';pond';. Do they tend to fly non-stop to Atlanta or Miami and then get connecting internal flights or is there a better way?

Finally although not really relevant to this forum but as Savannah is only a short distance away (and package holidays seem to spend even less time there) how long should I stay there for and is there any travel advantage by going to one before the other?

    Many thanks

How long should I stay, when do I go and how do I get there?

If this is your first time to Charleston, I would tend to tell you to spend 4 days at least. 3-5 days would be good. If you go with a tour group, well, that%26#39;s a personal decision. Depends if you feel like you would like to be on someone else%26#39;s time schedule. It is a little confusing to get around from the city to plantations and b ack, but if are good with directions and maps, it would be a problem. But, you may need to rent a car to get to the beach or plantations. You cannot come to Charleston without going to a plantation, to me that would be ridiculous. Late March/early April is peak tourist season can can be crowded, but I wouldn%26#39;t let that turn you off. As for coming from the UK, you would have to fly into a major hub, like Atlanta, and then connect to Charleston (CHS). Usairways, United, Delta, Northwest Airlines and Continental all fly into Charleston. Savannah is about 2.5 hours from Charleston and it is worth a day or 2 visit. No advantage into going to one before the other, though that I can think of.
