Is a family vacation to Myrtle Beach worth while?

Would love some feedback from Myrtle Beach visitors and locals.

Do you think that Myrtle Beach is a great place to go for a family vacation? Why or why not?

How would you rate the food there?

What are some of the top things to do in Myrtle Beach?

Do you have any personal experiences you would to share that would be beneficial to vacationing there?

Does anyone have anything bad to say about Myrtle Beach?

Thanks in advance for all your help!

Is a family vacation to Myrtle Beach worth while?

Well:

-Yes Myrtle Beach is a great place for a family vacation. You are from Florida and I wouldn%26#39;t compare it to ';Disney World'; but nothing can compare to Disney World.

-The food compared to other cities in beach areas is about a 3.5 out of a 5. Reason being, I am from Maryland and I love seafood and nothing compares to Maryland seafood. Also I work in DC so we have so many options to choose from (Italian, Middle Eastern, Southern, African, West Indies/Carribean, French, Irish, etc. etc.) which Myrtle doesn%26#39;t have such a good variety of. Mostly seafood and southern. There are some but they are hard to find and not very many. And I see you are from Miami, you may not think the food is the greatest but you won%26#39;t be disappointed-does that make sense.

-Top things to do would be: BEACH, Broadway at the Beach-www.broadwayatthebeach.com (any of the many things to do there); barefoot landing:www.barefootlanding.com (many of the things to do there as well); Nascar speedpark, Ripley%26#39;s Aquarium, Grand Prix race, myrtle waves or wild water, water parks, Dixie Stampede, Carolina Opry, Alabama Theater, other places but just to name a few.

-Personal experiences: My first trip there was so fustrating because the roads were confusing. I didn%26#39;t have a ';TRIP ADVISOR'; to explain the difference between North Myrtle Beach, North End Myrtle Beach, Myrtle Beach, Surfside Beach, Garden City Beach or North Ocean Boulevard and South Ocean Boulevard in North Myrtle Beach and Myrtle Beach. So we only drove to places that were w/in a 5 minute car ride from the hotel which didn%26#39;t give us much to see and do. But I still loved the beach itself and the atmosphere of the ';southern hospitality';. The region is good also. You can get to the North Carolina Beaches in a little over 1.5 hours. You have Charleston, SC which is gorgeous, you have all of these smaller towns that make you feel like you are in Mayberry.

Also, the second time coming we absolutely enjoyed everything. Our stay wasn%26#39;t as long since we were only stopping through for 2 nights but we still had a lot of fun. So you live and learn from your mistakes. I now plan on what we are going to see and do and know where everything is located so we can just go and do it rather than spending hours looking for it.

-Bad Things to Say about Myrtle Beach will probably be the hotel selections. You have so many to choose from w/in a 60 mile (north to south) radius that you are just pondering all of the time to pick the perfect hotel. You have condo selections, hotels that have condos, condos to rent from private owners or reatlors, you have hotels, motels, resort hotels. Everyone has their own opinion about them all. For updated hotels, you can%26#39;t go wrong with the newer hotels built w/in the past 5 years. We have found the perfect hotel for us and now we are afraid to go anywhere else, although some comments about other places are good, everyone will have a bad experience at some hotel or another eventually. I am very-very-picky about hotel rooms, I enjoy looking at the photos on this site of the traveler. Because if you look at the hotel photos, they are usually just their premiere room that no one ever sleeps in and they just used that one to take pictures. But you be the judge.

Hope this helps!!!

Is a family vacation to Myrtle Beach worth while?

It%26#39;s a great place for a family vacation because there is something for everyone from grandparents to toddlers. Of course lounging on the beach is #1, but there are shows, endless golf courses, mini-golf, shopping, restaurants to fit every budget. Accomodation choices are endless too. From beachhouses or condos that sleep multiple families to small mom %26amp; pop motels.

Possible negatives (for some)... very family oriented so at times can become crowded in restaurants. Likewise with traffic. Lots of whining kiddies in pools %26amp; hot tubs. Water isn%26#39;t beautiful %26amp; clear like the Gulf, for example.

For my family it feels very laid-back %26amp; like home. We enjoy upscale vacations sometimes such as all-inclusives in the Caribbean or going to NYC but when we want to relax it%26#39;s Myrtle Beach.

What to do? Myrtle Beach is the Golf Capital of the USA!

Have any of you ever stayed at or heard of the Holiday South Motel?

Yes! We started coming to Myrtle Beach over 15 years ago. Our children were aged 3, 5, 7 and 9 at the time. We have come back every year since then. We also went to DisneyWorld with them every year. We love MB because it%26#39;s whatever type of vacation you want it to be. When they were younger it was the beach, the pools and the attractions. Now the youngest is 18 and it%26#39;s just chilling, shopping, still the beach and still the pools. Our youngest son actually goes to Coastal Carolina College.

Food is like any other area in the world. Good and bad.

We stay away from the crazy places unless we want to be entertained and we%26#39;re not in the mood for flavor. Dixie Stampede is always lots of fun. We%26#39;ve been at least a dozen times.

This week we have had amazing meals at Greg Norman%26#39;s Grill, Pomodoro%26#39;s (Italian) great lunches at McAllister%26#39;s Grill, Piggy%26#39;s BBQ and Hamburger Joes.

Bad about MB? What can I say, we drive over 12 hours to get here, we come in the summer and in the winter and over the years we%26#39;ve introduced tons of our friends and family to this great place.

Where to stay? Depends upon your budget. We%26#39;ve stayed at Pirateland Campground when the kids were younger and now we stay at Kingston Plantation. To say we LOVE Kingston is an understatement!

Hope you choose MB, you won%26#39;t be dissapointed.

Here%26#39;s a Toronto Sun newspaper feature on Myrtle Beach you might be interested in reading.....

This is my second time here. I absolutely love the place!! Great food, great southern hospitality, and tons of things to do.

You have to eat at Carolina%26#39;s and you have to go to the House of Blues for good music (comedy night is Tuesday but for adult only - I haven%26#39;t laughed that hard in years). The kids will like the Nascar Speed Park, lots of shopping and restaurants at Broadway at the Beach, see alligators and tigers at Barefoot Landing.

You must have pizza at California Pizza.

Only one bad thing - jellyfish in the ocean. You have a 50/50 chance of being stung.

Personally, I%26#39;m not fond of MB. The reasons: traffic, high rise condos, partying students. When I vacation, I want to feel like I%26#39;m on vacation. I don%26#39;t want to have to fight to get places. I like the slower pace of the (s)low country i.e. Charleston, Kiawah, Seabrook Island.

I think the first thing you need to ask yourself is ';how you really vacation?';. If you need lots of action, MB is probably a good match; if you like doing your own thing when you want to do it, I%26#39;d pick another destination.

myrtle beach is great and there is so much to do there. BUT! my family and friends stay in garden city beach, about 10 miles south of myrtle. we get a condo from dunes realty every year at one ocean place. it is very quite and family friendly. well worth the 10 minute drive back to broadway at the beach, for dinner and fun.
