Bringing large group of high school sophomores -- what to do

I%26#39;m bringing 150 high school students to Charleston in March %26#39;07. Need to know the best places to see (educational value) for a large group, and where to sleep and eat. We%26#39;ll be there for two days and are interested in a possible harbor cruise with a DJ and dinner. We%26#39;re on a tight budget though, so we%26#39;re looking for the best deals.

Wow. 150 kids? You must be paying pennance or something. :-)

The first thing that popped into my mind was the USS Yorktown exhibit. It is a fabulous piece of history that this generation of kids needs to know about. The entire Patriots Point area is a great place to bring them, as there is much more than the carrier! Agree with Floski. Patriot%26#39;s Point would be great. There is a HIlton Hotel right there that does a lot of big special events so they could handle a group of your size, but I don%26#39;t know about the price, could be pricey. You could set up a ';scaveneger hunt'; downtown on the peninsula that woudl allow them to learn, while visiting historic sites and seeing some sites downtown. It is an easily walkable city so they could do that in groups just fine, but you would have to have a lot of chaperones. SpiritLine does do dinner cruises, I would talk with them about a group of your size. Also, check into Charlestown Landing. They are trying to re-vamp the place, so that could be good.

CTL is the original site of the first landing in South Carolina of English settlers.

They have just finished a huge makeover, and I%26#39;ve heard that it is fabulous. You have plenty of time to research, so feel free to continue to ask questions; we love to answer them.

I would imagine that most places are going to give you a pretty big break with that many people. I agree with Floski about visiting the Yorktown and Charles Towne Landing. You can also do a harbor tour and visit Ft. Sumter. You can tour through the Charleston Museum or the Aquarium.

For Lodging that would accomadate that many people I would contact the executive offices of the Charleston Area Convetion and Visitors Bureau. They will have a list of hotels that are large enough and will give you deals.

When I took eighth graders, we always started with a walking tour, then a carriage tour and then over to Patriot%26#39;s Point for the Fort Sumter Tour and USS Yorktown. We ended the day having a meal at one of the restaurants at Shem Creek - usually R.B%26#39;s. Best wishes.
