trip review- 1st timers

We had the pleasure of visiting this wonderful city for the first time for 5 days over Columbus Day weekend. I can honestly say that this is the prettiest and most friendly place we have ever stayed and I would jump back on a plane to go there again tomorrow if I had a chance! First off, we stayed at the Francis Marion Hotel and despite poor reviews we had a wonderful stay there. I took the advice of a couple of experts from the Charleston area and emailed the room reservations manager several days in advance, requesting one of their more ';updated'; rooms. Though it was small and the bathroom quite tiny, the bed was extremely comfortable, the area of the hotel was quiet and it fit our needs just fine. AND, it was a fantastic deal for $108 a night; great location on King Street and right across from the lovely park at Marion Square. --------- Meals we enjoyed: Roberts was the highlight of the trip. The food and entertainment were fabulous and they made sure our wine glass was never empty! We also enjoyed Coast and Blossom for dinners. Had an OK experience at RB%26#39;s at Shem Creek; though the views were cool looking out at the shrimp boats. We also went to ';A Taste of Charleston'; which is held every year over that particular weekend at Boone Hall Plantation. I would highly recommend it as an activity to do. Entertainment was fun( waiter%26#39;s race, a great party band.......) and I had the opportunity to try oyster shooters! There were about 50 Greater Charleston restaurants represented; a very fun day! -----------Other things we did: did a carriage ride with Old South, went to the aquarium, took the tour boat out to Fort Sumter, spent a day touring the barrier islands and a little beach time: Isle of Palms, Sullivan%26#39;s Island and James Island/ Folly Beach. We also walked through Waterfront Park and walked around the Battery, taking it all in and snapping lots of pictures. The homes in this area are incredible; would have liked to have had time to tour some. Saturday morning there was a farmer%26#39;s market right across from our hotel and we bought some cool souveniers and homemade treats to take home to our dogs. The city seems to be very dog friendly; even found a bar that celebrates ';yappy hour'; for those with four-legged friends! ---------------- We have visited many places over the years and found Charleston to be everything plus more than what we were expecting. We will definitely return to this ';Southern Belle.';
