Thanksgiving & Pet Friendly Accommodations

We%26#39;re considering spending Thanksgiving in Charleston. We would be there from the 22nd to 26th. We have a DS(14) %26amp; a mini-pinscher that travels with us. I%26#39;m fairly certain we want to stay in the Historic District. Once we reach our destination, we%26#39;d rather not drive anywhere, but would if there was something that we ';must do';. Nice accommodations with many things within walking distance are ideal for us. We%26#39;re interested in tours, comedy, dinner shows, etc. that a 14 yr. old boy would like. We, including our DS, also enjoy fine dining. We live in Florida %26amp; aren%26#39;t interested in going to the beach. The only shops we like looking in are specialty shops. We don%26#39;t enjoy flea markets, outlet malls, regular malls, etc.

Are there any special events that weekend that we shouldn%26#39;t miss? We%26#39;d love to find a special meal for Thanksgiving dinner. How about Christmas activities? Anything going on that early?

All suggestions for pet friendly accommodations, things to do, %26amp; places to eat will be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

What is your price limit on a ';hotel?';

It%26#39;s been a very long time since I stayed in Charleston for Thanksgiving but I think my extended family and I stayed at the Charleston Place before it was the Charleston Place. We had dinner there and enjoyed it but that was years ago. I%26#39;m sure someone could offer a better suggestion.

The majority of places to stay in DT Charleston, will not allow pets at any price. Charleston is strict on animal waste when you walk your dog too (you must carry dog waste baggies).

The Charleston Place is pet friendly for a fee and has a good location. If you dont like the Charleston Place, your best bet is with a B%26amp;B because basically that is the only hotel in downtown that will take pets. The Residence Inn Downtown Riverview will also accept pets but I cant tell you anything about it.

As far as places to eat... try using the search option located towards the top of the page. If you cant find the info you seek just post back.

I think you will find 4 days is more than enough to discover most of downtown Charleston. IMO a 14 year old boy might get bored after a few days depending on what he likes. I would suggest you take one day to visit a plantatio.

Thanks for all the great info, %26amp; the links. I haven%26#39;t looked at all of them yet, but will. I did look at Charleston Place, %26amp; the cheapest rate was $539/ night. We were thinking in the $200 range. We would probably go a little higher, if we had to.

Unfortunately, restaurant rankings on here don%26#39;t help much. They seem to be ranked by most popular not best food. The most popular restaurants don%26#39;t necessarily have the best food. I wish they were ranked by quality not value.

I%26#39;ve never heard of Plantatio. I%26#39;ll definitely research it. We plan to do a Ghost tour, %26amp; probably a carriage ride. I haven%26#39;t really had time to do a lot of planning yet.

What I meant was to search past posts and not TA%26#39;s ranking. A lot of the time the same general questions are asked. When you use the search function, you get a lot of info in a few of seconds- instead of waiting for someone to post back with the same info :)

Usually key words like restaurants or fine dinning should work.

Again if it doesnt work... post back.

Good luck with the hotel. A pet friendly hotel at a good price, location, and during a holiday... might be a tall order. Most places charge any where from 20-75 dollars extra per night for a pet.... plus tax. Either way it is not going to be cheap.

Some of the charleston forum regulars might be able to help you more in the morning.

I was just looking at some past posts on walking tours, restaurants, carriage tours, and ect. Lots of good info... definitely try reviewing past posts :) At least a good place to get you started...

I didn%26#39;t realize we would have a hard time finding accommodations . We may end up having to go someplace else. I%26#39;ll keep researching, before I give up though.

Surely check back tomorrow to see what others say. I might be way off base.

I like to travel with my small dog when all possible too. She loves to travel and we love having her along. In fact we are looking for mountain cabin we can take her too for later this fall/winter.

With planning pervious trips I had a hard time finding a decent place to stay (looking only downtown) that allowed pets and wasn’t outrageous. Perhaps I wasn’t looking in the right places. But ever hotel in downtown Charleston I wanted to stay at would not take pets. It seems that the privately owned places (such as BBs and lofts) are more willing to make exceptions for our furry friends.

Again do check back... I%26#39;m not a local so there might be other options I dont know of.

There are lots of ';pet friendly'; hotels in the Historic District. You can stay at the Indigo Inn~ which you will see on this web-site that they have wonderful reviews. There is a pet fee of $20 per pet per night. You can also try the Meeting Street Suites~ They have a $25 pet fee or the Vendue Inn and they have a $50 1 time pet fee. All of these accomadations are right in the center of downtown and they would be more reasonable than Charleston Place.

As for what is going on that time of the year, I would suggest you go to our web-site www.charlestoncvb.com and click on events and you can scroll to the month that you are visiting and there is a calendar you can print.

Also another suggestion is that when you arrive in Charleston you can come to the Visitors Center and we usually have a print out of all of the Holiday Events and we have a print out of what restaurants are open for the Holidays and their menus.

I hope that this helps and that you still plan on visiting Charleston.

We went in May with a 25 lb Schnoodle -- had a good time, but found out about a local magazine on our last day LOW COUNTRY DOG -- get one! It will list places you can take the dog.

FYI - Old South allowed us to take him on a ride. But you know, our boy is very very good. He rode in dad%26#39;s lap.

Cannot take your dog into the outdoor market.

Marriott%26#39;s Residence Inn in Mt. Pleasant charged $75 one time fee for the dog. Gave us a ground floor room near a door so it was easy for walks at night. Lot%26#39;s of great walking area around it too.

Isle of Palms has a nice beach, provides doggie baggies on boardwalk to the shore, pick up extras!

Around that time should be the James Island Festival of Lights. It%26#39;s a county park that you drive through and look at Christmas (excuse me, ';holiday';) lights. There is a place to roast marshmallows, shop and eat a little too. It%26#39;s something nice to go to for a short while in the evening.
